Since the fall of 2014, the Rachel Corrie Foundation has had the privilege of providing education funds to Lamees Abu Rahmah, a young Palestinian woman, at Birzeit University. Lamees is the eldest of four children and the first in her family to attend university. She also comes from a family with a strong commitment to nonviolent resistance to the occupation; she lives in Bil’in and her uncle and aunt were both martyred during the weekly protests of this village.
Lamees is passionate about access to education, particularly for girls. The Rachel Corrie Foundation feels a strong commitment to the same cause. During a recent trip back to the West Bank, Board Member Farihan Bushnaq was able to meet up with Lamees and her family. She was also able to meet with Birzeit University staff and other potential sponsors to work towards growing this scholarship to benefit other young women in the West Bank and Gaza.
In the future, we hope to establish a long-term scholarship for Palestinian women to attend university. In the meantime, we are thrilled to support Lamees as this impressive young woman works toward a journalism degree, which will improve both her life and those of many in her community. If you’re interested in supporting Lamees and other young Palestinian women through scholarship funds please consider making a donation today! Letter from Lamees:
“I would like to sincerely thank you for your generous donation to the scholarship program at Birzeit University, I was very happy when I learned that I was selected as one of the beneficiary students of your scholarship and my happiness continued as you supported me semester after the other.
My wish came true because of your generous donation, studying in Birzeit University is something that I have always imagined and wanted to accomplish for a long time. Since I was in high school I imagined myself walking through its halls, carrying my camera and books and working on achieving my goals in journalism, which is my passion for a long time.
The financial situation in my household made it difficult for me to finish my studies, especially with having another sister studying in Birzeit University with me, in addition to buying the tools that are required for my major; I couldn’t afford to buy a camera, which is essential for my major and required for my classes.
But your decision of donation has changed lives; one of them is mine and my family’s. It goes beyond just a simple donation of money, it has helped me and my family in more ways than you can imagine; financially and emotionally. Because of your help I am having this life-time opportunity in my beloved BZU, the way I have always imagined it would be; living the student life that I wanted and focusing on my future goals. So for that, I thank you for supporting me through my journey in life and being a
part of it.”
