Tarik Bentlemsani, acoustic and finger style guitarist, will provide classical, jazz, and Arab music. Ramzy Baroud, internationally-syndicated columnist, media consultant, author and founder of PalestineChronicle.com will share brief insights about his Gaza homeland.
The devastating and catastrophic 51-day assault on Gaza during Ramadan this summer halted the annual soccer tournament. As a result, plans for two events under the banner of the Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament were postponed. But in mid-September, in order to provide some “psychological relief,” organizers on the ground conducted a compressed, ten-day version of the traditional men’s football tournament and are now preparing for a newly-designed event in December for athletes with disabilities.
The September men’s tournament brought together 352 young men in thirty-two teams from all over Gaza, each taking the names of towns and villages in historic Palestine that were destroyed in 1948. Some teams dedicated their play to friends lost in this summer’s assault. The December Rachel Corrie Football/Table Tennis Tournament for Athletes with Disabilities, organized by Al Basma Club for the Disabled, will coincide with the UN’s Enable – International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3). The event will welcome 185 male and female athletes with disabilities, representing ten participating clubs, and including seventy-five deaf players who will take to the football field to vie for the event’s very first annual cup. A table tennis tournament will provide a sport forum for the deaf, amputees, paraplegics, and polio victims.
Under devastating conditions, our organizers in Gaza are working to make the 2014 Ramadan Football tournament, with all its components, the best so far! Please reward their remarkable spirit and determination with your help. Learn more about each event at www.GazaLife.org and join us for dinner November 20 at Great Cuisine of India!
