March 16: Remembering Rachel Corrie – Peace, Justice, & Dance at Olympia Ballroom with special guest Ronnie Barkan

March 10, 2015 @ 2:02 am

Thank you to our friends across the globe who joined us Monday, March 16, 2015, to commemorate Rachel Corrie and her strong stand for justice twelve years ago in Rafah, Gaza.

We were joined in Olympia by warm community, and local poets and activists Lennée Reid and Rachel Greene.  Their words moved us to the emotional core of issues of social injustice prevalent today, and echoed Rachel Corrie’s visions of equality.

Ronnie Barkan, a longtime Jewish Israeli activist and cofounder of Boycott From Within,  spoke of being inspired by the Corrie family, and asked that we simply continue doing the work that we’re doing.  For peace anywhere will not happen in isolation to itself, but needs our united commitment.

The Corrie family’s statement from Washington DC on March 16th, where they were meeting with Department of State and Congressional officials, echoed similar sentiments: “As we look back at Selma fifty years ago and Ferguson today, we realize that our own civil rights struggle is not won in a single march or court case.  It is ongoing.  As our family continues our journey for justice, we thank those across the U.S., the world, and in Palestine and Israel who travel with us.  Together, we will find justice for Rachel – both the justice she deserves and the justice for which she stood.”

With this, all at the Rachel Corrie Foundation urge you to take action this month in solidarity with Rachel Corrie’s vision of justice, peace, and equality.

“No Justice for Rachel Corrie–or Palestine”

Special thanks to the wonderful Yodelady and caller Anne Marie Schaefer for helping us dance our March 16th night away!

“This has to stop.  I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop.  I don’t think it’s an extremist thing to do anymore.  I still really want to dance around to Pat Benatar and have boyfriends and make comics for my coworkers.  But I also want this to stop.”  Rachel Corrie
