Veterans for Peace and the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons will present a program on February 26th at Traditions cafe, 300 5th Avenue SW in Olympia from 7 to 9 pm. Included is an award-winning film screening of “Making Waves: The Rebirth of the Golden Rule”, followed by talks by Zoe Byrd, Golden Rule Ambassador, and Peter Lumsdaine, Washington PSR.
The Golden Rule was a sailboat with a crew of four Quaker activists who left Long Beach, CA in 1958 intending to sail to the Marshall Islands to protest nuclear bomb testing by the US military. Soon after leaving a stop in Hawaii, the ship and crew were seized by the US Coast Guard.
In 2010 the boat was found, underwater in Humboldt Bay, CA. It was rebuilt and sailed the Pacific coast for three years. This Spring it plans to sail to Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Guam, Okinawa, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
