Posted on February 1, 2025

We invite you to and attend this timely event as we welcome Angela Davis back to Olympia. From 7 to 9:15pm on Friday, February 21, come here Angela Davis in discussion with other scholars talking about Collective Struggle in Critical Times, at the Olympia Film Society.  Doors open at 6pm.

GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!

From prison abolition to Palestine liberation, Angela Davis has been at the forefront of radical intellectual work and political activism for decades. Her public rise in the Black Power and Women of Color movements made her an outspoken advocate for racial, gender, and economic justice. She is the author of many books, and a founding member of Critical Resistance, a national organization dedicated to the dismantling of the prison industrial complex.

This intergenerational conversation will draw inspiration from Dr. Davis’s ideas for abolition, international solidarity for Palestine, and collective movement building. As she has written, “We cannot go on as usual. . .We cannot be moderate. We will have to be willing to stand up and say no with our combined spirits, our collective intellects, and our many bodies.”

Dr. Davis will be in conversation with Gilda Sheppard & Ranna.

Gilda Sheppard, Ph.D., is faculty emerita in sociology, cultural and media studies at

Evergreen Tacoma, and taught at Washington prisons for over a decade. She is an international award-winning filmmaker, most recently for her documentary Since I Been Down, featuring the Black Prisoner Caucus and their liberation education program.

Ranna is part of a Seattle-based grassroots collective of Palestinian and SWANA feminists that organizes at the intersection of gender justice and anti-imperialism. As a member of the diaspora, she continues to fight for the liberation of Palestine through building education and community in Seattle.

Sponsors: Rachel Corrie Foundation, Evergreen Tacoma (and others TBD)

Olympia Film Society showing of “Foragers”

Posted on April 3, 2024

The Olympia Film Society, in conjunction with the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice, will screen the documentary film Foragers, Thursday, April 11th, at the Capitol Theater, 206 5th Ave SE, in Olympia. Doors open at 6 p.m, and the film will screen at 7 p.m.

With “wry humor and a meditative pace,” the film depicts the dramas around the Palestinian custom of foraging for wild edible plants, and the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. The film’s director, Jumana Manna, is a Palestinian visual artist and filmmaker whose “work explores how power is articulated, focusing on the body, land and materiality in relation to colonial inheritances and histories of place.”

The 64-minute documentary will be followed by a post-film presentation and Q&A with Savvina Chowdhury, Political Economy and Environmental Justice Professor at The Evergreen State College, and by Peter Bohmer, representing the recently formed Palestine Action of South Sound (PASS).

The film event will mark and celebrate the 45th birthday of local activist Rachel Corrie, killed by the Israeli military in 2003 as she stood to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home in Gaza. Rachel’s mother, Cindy Corrie, will introduce the documentary. Proceeds from the film screening will benefit Palestinian children in Gaza.
