The Nakba: 74 Years and Counting

Posted on May 22, 2022

The Nakba
74 Years and Counting
From the Rachel Corrie Foundation Public Policy Committee

On May 15th, 2022, the 13 million Palestinians around the world mark the Nakba, or the “catastrophe” of the 1948 dispossession of their ancestral territory, and the founding of the Israeli state on their national homeland. In the two-year period around the Nakba, Palestinians lost about 78 percent of historic Palestine. At least 40 percent of Palestinians became refugees, subjected to violent “ethnic cleansing,” and thousands were killed in a series of atrocities and massacres. Settlers took possession of their homes, farms, and businesses, in a repeat of the settler colonialism earlier inflicted on the Americas, South Africa, and other parts of the world. In 1967, the Israeli military occupied the rest of historic Palestine.

As the world’s attention is focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian people are facing their own Nakba in 2022, at the hands of another occupier who claims much of their land, and denies their very cultural existence. Imagine if Putin successfully annexes most of Ukraine and displaces its people, and moves settlers from Russia to take their place. Imagine if 19 years from now, he invades the rest of Ukraine, and begins to settle Russians in those occupied territories. Then the history of Ukrainians would begin to resemble the experiences of Palestinians, with an occupation that is normalized in the name of “might makes right.”

If we understand such a vision as a nightmare for Ukrainians, we can begin to understand what the continuing denial of nationhood – and in many ways, a continuation of the Nakba that has never ended – means to Palestinians in the 21st century. As our hearts go out to Europeans suffering from war and occupation, we have an opportunity to extend that empathy to others being denied their basic human rights, and to stop enabling other wars and occupations.
Our Palestinian-American neighbor and friend, ponders RCF's pre-COVID Nakba display at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia, recalling the hundreds of villages destroyed. He was born in Haifa and experienced the Nakba in 1948. He helps us to understand.

Holding Israel Accountable: Remembering Rachel Corrie. A Zoom Webinar.

Posted on March 1, 2022

How do we hold Israel accountable for decades of oppression, displacement, land theft, occupation and loss? At this moment, what are the avenues for seeking peace with justice for Palestinians and Israelis? Five guests, representing many years of experience with this issue, share their work and current perspectives.

 Guest Speakers:

Amnesty International recently published a report calling “Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians a cruel system of domination and a crime against humanity.” Rachel Corrie Foundation March 16th observances are about education, community building, and action. There is work for us all to do – locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. With perspectives as Palestinians in the diaspora, representatives of solidarity organizations, and scholars, our guest speakers helped those of us at the grassroots level think how to effectively challenge Israel’s apartheid system and crimes against humanity that Amnesty International, other human and legal rights organizations, the Palestinian people, and Israeli activists have called out.

Donations to the Rachel Corrie Foundation on March 16th will benefit the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme.

Rachel Corrie

Born and raised in Olympia, Washington, human rights activist and observer Rachel Corrie went to Gaza in 2003 with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the long-entrenched and systematic oppression and dispossession of the Palestinian population, using non-violent, direct-action methods and principles. While standing in front of a home threatened with demolition by the Israeli military, Rachel was killed when run over by an armored Caterpillar D9R bulldozer operated by two Israeli soldiers. With annual March 16th remembrances, we at the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice seek to bring attention to the loss of lives, lands, freedoms, and opportunities that have continued since Rachel’s stand in Gaza in 2003 and to build and strengthen the community of constructive, nonviolent resisters of which she was a part.

Madison-Rafah Sister City Project

We were delighted to again co-host our March 16th observance with friends at the Madison-Rafah Sister City Project. MRSCP was founded in 2003 by concerned citizens in Madison, Wisconsin, to forge person-to-person relationships with Rafah, Palestine, to increase public awareness of the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and to influence public policy for the benefit of both peoples. Until COVID-19, MRSCP annually hosted an in-person Rachel Corrie commemorative event in Madison. Visit the Madison-Rafah Sister City website to learn more about their work.

Check out an interview with Madison-Rafah Sister City members Cassandra Dixon and Rowan Attala on WORT 89.9FM, a community radio station in Madison, Wisconsin!

Meet Hanan Khateeb, Our 2021 Birzeit University Women’s Scholarship Recipient

Posted on June 4, 2021

Hanan Khateeb is a fourth-year Architectural Engineering student at Birzeit University. She is from Bil’in, Palestine, a village located near Ramallah in the West Bank. Here is what Hanan recently had to say about her studies and plans for the future:

“I chose to major in architectural engineering because I’ve always been interested in drawing and painting.  I’ve been an avid sketcher ever since I was a young girl, and I distinctly remember volunteering in the many wall painting activities in my village of Bil’in. I’m fortunate to have been given the opportunity to channel my passion into an academic major. I plan to pursue a career in the field after graduation by opening my very own architectural engineering and design office, which will ensure financial stability for me and my family.

I’ve faced several financial difficulties during my studies at Birzeit University…threatening my hopes of graduating as an architect. With help from the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice, however, I was able to cover my fees and pursue my studies without worry or stress.

I’m grateful to the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice for helping me complete my education and pursue my dreams at Birzeit University.”

We wish Hanan all the best with the rest of her studies and her plans for the future.

RCF’s volunteer Program/Projects Committee routinely reviews, evaluates, and looks for ways to expand our scholarship support for Palestinian students. To support this program directly, please consider a donation to RCF’s educational initiatives.
