June 12: Ask Your Representative to Sign Congressional Letter Challenging Israel’s Mistreatment of Palestinian Children

May 20, 2015 @ 12:53 am

The deadline for signing the letter is June 12th.

On Tuesday, June 2, the American Friends Service Committee hosted a Congressional briefing on Capitol Hill to examine Israel’s child detention practices. The briefing was attended by more than one hundred people, including 36 Congressional offices.

In response to concerns about Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children, Representative McCollum has initiated a letter to Secretary Kerry calling on the State Department to make the protection of children a priority in the United States-Israel relationship.

Every year, hundreds of Palestinian children – some as young as 12 years old – are detained and arrested in an Israeli military detention system where ill treatment and abuse is widespread.

Many are taken from their families in night raids, held without charges or due process, and subjected to abuse and poor conditions while in custody.

Please call and write your representative today and urge them to sign this important letter before the June 12th deadline.

Also, please make a quick call to Representative McCollum’s office to thank them for leading this important initiative.

The Rachel Corrie Foundation is eager to support this effort, because of our connections through the years with those who as children were imprisoned themselves or impacted by seeing young relatives imprisoned, and raised into a reality that deprives them of a fundamental sense of freedom.

The “No Way to Treat a Child” campaign, organized by the Chicago Faith Coalition, is aimed at bringing attention to Israel’s routine mistreatment of Palestinian children.
Thank you to the American Friends Service Committee, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, and many others for organizing and supporting this important effort.
