SUMMARY:Rebuilding the Anti-Nuclear Weapons Movement Together - Seattle CONFERENCE
DESCRIPTION:Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) and the Washington Against Nuclear Weapons coalition are partnering with the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship\, Partnership for a World Without Nuclear Weapons\, and many others to bring a 2-day grassroots action conference to Seattle this April 11-12\, at the Seattle First Baptist Church. \nA Second Nuclear Arms Race has begun. The United States is expected to spend nearly $2 trillion on nuclear weapons over the next few decades\, and is rapidly expanding production. Our arms control treaties have been abandoned. We are growing closer to nuclear war by the day. But we have been here before. \nThis two-day conference\, open to everyone\, will feature field experts\, panels\, and workshops dedicated to educating the public and reviving the movement in the Pacific Northwest to abolish nuclear weapons. \nRegister here for the conference. \nThe Rachel Corrie Foundation is a partner organization of Washington Against Nuclear Weapons. \n \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Mimi Syed: Her Work in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mimi Syed: Her Work in Gaza \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, April 11\, 2025\, 7-9 PM \nThe United Churches of Olympia Social Hall \n110 11th Ave SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501 \nSponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (RCF) & Palestine Action of Sound Sound (PASS) \nDr. Mimi Syed\, a local emergency room physician who made two recent trips to the Gaza Strip will speak in Olympia\, Friday\, April 11th\, 7-9 pm\, at The United Churches of Olympia Social Hall\, 110 11th Ave SE\, in downtown Olympia. \nDr. Syed is a board-certified emergency medicine physician\, a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians\, and an assistant clinical professor at the University of Washington and Washington State University. From August 8 to September 5\, 2024\, and from December 3 to December 31\, 2024\, Dr. Syed served in both al-Aqsa and Nasser Hospitals in Gaza. She will discuss her experience there and the impact of the current and ongoing war on Gaza’s children\, the injuries she saw and treated\, the targeting of hospitals and healthcare workers by the Israeli military\, and the lack of “basic life essentials” for the people of Gaza. Some images in this presentation may be unsettling. \nDr. Emily Antoon-Walsh\, pediatrician\, will introduce Dr. Syed and talk about her own work with the Institute for Understanding Anti-Palestinian Racism. The presentations will be followed by Q&A. \nThe educational event is sponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice and Palestine Action of South Sound (PASS) in remembrance of activist Rachel Corrie’s stand in Gaza on March 16\, 2003\, as she stood to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home and whose birth day is celebrated on April 10th. Palestinian sweets will be provided. The free event is open to the public and all are welcome. \nFor information contact info@rachelcorriefoundation.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Arts Walk: Visions of Grief and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (RCF)\, Art Forces\, and the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural Project (ORSMP)\, during Arts Walk weekend\, for a celebration of solidarity\, perseverance\, and coalition-building. With support from the broad range of organizations represented in the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural\, we will reflect on the Palestinian concept صمود (sumud or “steadfastness”)\, and how artistic expression can foster resilience within our communities. \nThroughout Arts Walk weekend\, Visions of Grief and Hope\, an interactive art installation by Diana Fakhoury and Brady Black\, will be displayed in front of the mural. In their words\, “This collaborative work is an expression of collective grief and hope—a journey moving through tragedy and remembrance to hope and resilience.” The community will be invited to contribute messages of their own to the installation. \nOn the second floor of the adjacent Labor Temple building\, the Art Forces Peacemaker Gallery will be exhibiting Shoshana Cohen’s original collection of photographs depicting the day-to-day lives of youth living under occupation in the West Bank during the 1980s and 90s.
