SUMMARY:Finding Home 2019 First Friday Films - This is Home
DESCRIPTION:Finding Home \nMideast Focus Ministry \nFirst Friday Film Series VI \nSaint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral \nThe loss of home is often complicated by long years as refugees. What does it mean to lose one’s home? What is involved in finding home? Families must often separate to thrive at all. Some face the danger of never belonging anywhere\, once they are safe. Such elements of refugee-hood complicate other real issues of unemployment and isolation under other people’s sky. \nIn this year’s series\, we join families engaged in complicates struggles. We discover what creates community and what is essential for finding home! \nTHIS IS HOME \nThis film follows four families sent to resettle in Baltimore in 2016. They have only eight months to learn English\, find jobs\, and become self-sufficient. The clock starts right when they land. A vast cultural divide hinders new arrivals and Americans trying to help them. Part way through the process\, the President issues a travel ban. Suddenly their lives are all the more perilous.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Rights Advocacy Day
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, we have watched the campaign for Palestinian rights in the U.S. move into places of government – to city councils\, state legislatures\, and the U.S. Congress.\n\n\nOn the federal level\, we’ve challenged anti-BDS legislation and supported the first-ever bill in support of Palestinian rights and Palestinian kids. In Washington State\, we ’ve challenged resolutions in the state legislature and a letter signed by U.S. governors that misrepresented and intended to disrupt the BDS movement for Palestinian rights.\n\n\n\n\nThrough our advocacy\, we have become stronger\,\nand it’s time to take another step!\n\nYou are invited to join us for a\nPalestinian Rights Advocacy Day\nin Olympia\, Friday\, March 15th\, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.\n\nSee Schedule and More Details Here.\n\nRegister Here by March 8!

SUMMARY:JVP Seattle\, Monthly Mincha - The Torah of Angela Davis
DESCRIPTION:Join JVP Seattle on February 23rd from 2-4pm for another monthly mincha–JVP Seattle’s new monthly Shabbat learning session that is open to all. \n \nThis Black History Month we find ourselves at a moment ripe with opportunity to reinvigorate a vibrant spirit of Black and Jewish solidarity. We can only do this wholeheartedly if we unabashedly defend our bold Black movement leaders who are under attack for speaking up for Palestine. \nOn February 15\, Jews in Birmingham\, Alabama\, are gathering to hold a Shabbat to welcome Professor Angela Davis back to her hometown. They have asked us to gather across the country as well to show our solidarity. \nWe in Seattle will be honoring Angela Davis during our Saturday monthly Mincha on the 23rd! We will be reading from the Torah of Angela Davis\, a collection created by Jay Saper\, and will dream\, celebrate\, and commit to all of us getting free. \n\nWe will be gathering at Pipsqueak Art Gallery in the Central District\, which is a wheelchair accessible space. We ask that you please come scent free. Feel free to bring snacks or beverages to share— but most importantly just bring yourself!\n \nPlease send any access needs\, questions and RSVP to emmett.stanfield@gmail.com\n\n \nWe hope to see you there!\n\n— \nJewish Voice for Peace is a diverse and democratic community of activists inspired by Jewish tradition to work together for peace\, social justice\, and human rights. \nTo Subscribe to this list: send an email to jvp-seattle-announcements-subscribe@lists.riseup.net

SUMMARY:Block the Wall Community Gathering and March
DESCRIPTION:We’re reaching out to invite you to our Block The Wall Community Gathering and March this Wednesday the 20th! We are participating in the nationwide #blockthewall mobilization in response to the recent state of emergency and border wall deal. We refuse to choose between Trump’s openly racist wall and the Democrats’ implicitly racist “smart border.” The differences between Trump’s border wall and a soft-power smart wall are variations on the same deadly theme. We choose another way: freedom of movement\, solidarity and mutual aid. Together\, we can demonstrate that we can build a better world. \nAt 4pm we’ll gather at Percival Park to meet and share food and hot drinks\, make signs\, and play games. Community groups and organizations are invited to table their materials. We would like to uplift groups that organize around migrant justice\, who do solidarity work at detention centers\, etc. If this is you\, please email us and let us know how we can support your work at this time! If you would like to table\, show up! Please bring whatever tables and canopies you might need. \nAt 5pm we’ll gather at Percival Landing to march through downtown with banners and signs and hand out informational leaflets. We are playing on the theme of “emergency” – wear high visibility vests and bring caution tape! We will be stopping momentarily at intersections along our route for folks to give speeches or perform acts. If you want to reserve a spot\, shoot us an email! \nWe hope you are able to attend this event. We need a bold\, positive vision of the future in contrast to Trump’s white supremacist fantasy. We need to create a world in which people can move freely\, where families can find refuge from danger\, and communities are brave enough to welcome newcomers and create shared sense of belonging. \nSee you on Wednesday! \n<3 Olympia Block the Wall\nolyblockthewall@riseup.net \nVideo for the National Call\nhttps://vimeo.com/317503449 \nFacebook event for Olympia\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/831044973910525/?ti=ia

SUMMARY:Lunch with Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei: Mental Health in Gaza Under Siege
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 16\, Olympia\, Washington \nVenue:  The Olympia Center\, Rooms 101 & 102 \nTime: Noon-1:00 p.m.  Bring your lunch! \nLocation: 222 Columbia St. NW\, Olympia\, WA 98501 \nMental Health in Gaza Under Siege \nPlease join RCF for a community lunch discussion to hear Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei\, psychiatrist and Director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) speak about psychological health in Gaza in 2018. Discussion will be facilitated by Dr. John Van Eenwyk. \nThe lunch is from 12-1 p.m.\, Friday\, November 16th\, at The Olympia Center\, Rooms 101 & 102\, 222 Columbia St. NW.  Guests are urged to arrive a few minutes before noon and to bring their lunches.  Coffee and tea will be provided.  Admission is free\, but please register so we can estimate attendance.  Donations are requested to support completion of GCMHP’s new building that will provide expansion of the organization’s vital treatment\, training\, and education programs. \nDr. Abu Jamei joined GCMHP as a student in the High Diploma Programme in Community Mental Health and subsequently served as a Psychiatrist-Clinical Supervisor and Director of Training and Research.  In 2014\, he was appointed Executive Director.  His particular interests include neuropsychiatry\, child and adolescent psychiatry\, and advocacy and policy change. \nOn July 21\, 2014\, during an Israeli bombing attack on Gaza\, a home of Dr. Yasser’s extended family was hit by a missile as family members were breaking their Ramadan fast with an iftar dinner.  Twenty-eight were killed\, including nineteen children and three pregnant women.  “There was no place for parents and children to hide\,” said Dr. Abu Jamei.  “You never knew where the bombs were going to fall.” Dr. Abu Jamei’s response was to continue his work at GCMHP.   “In Gaza\, you just have to start by doing something. Select anything that will do good\, and that is the right thing to do.” \nGCMHP provides crisis intervention and rehabilitation services to families in Gaza who have been traumatized by years of military occupation\, bombing campaigns\, blockade\, and siege.  This painful history coupled with extreme\, siege-induced unemployment rates makes the work of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme unique and timely in the world of global mental health.   Bring your lunch and join the discussion to learn more! \nThe Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice is proud to join our regional partners and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation in making this event and opportunity possible.

SUMMARY:"A Day in the Life of Yemen" Luke Somers Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Rachel Corrie Foundation is honored to present the photography exhibit\, “A Day in the Life of Yemen”\, showcasing the work of the late photojournalist Luke Somers for the month of September 2018 at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501) in partnership with the Olympia Film Society. \nAbout Luke Somers \nLuke Somers\, a British-born American freelance photographic journalist and resident of Yemen\, was killed in a failed raid attempt in December 2014\, one year and three months after his abduction by armed tribesmen. Luke arrived in Sana’a\, Yemen in 2011 as an English teacher; and\, although revered by his students and colleagues\, Luke began to shift gears into photojournalism\, bearing witness to the visceral realities – both bleak and inspiring – of the country\, as well as the cultural phenomena of the Arab Spring as it swept through the region. \nAs time unraveled\, Luke became a full-time freelance journalist who worked for several Yemeni newspaper outlets throughout Sana’a\, including National Yemen and Yemen Times.  In the process\, Luke began submitting photo essays to prestigious news organizations\, including The New York Times\, Al Jazeera\, BBC and NPR\, highlighting cultural\, personal and political facets of the country’s people.  Luke spent much of his time in Tent City\, Change Square – the protestors’ main area of living and congregating – where he had spent countless hours\, days\, weeks and\nmonths sharing food\, plans\, conversation\, and stories.  This was Luke’s home. \nPurpose of the Exhibit \nLuke\, amid his many human qualities\, was a thoughtful\, intensely passionate\, sensitive soul who arrived in Yemen with no agenda but to simply be.  His authentic and outgoing outlook toward the Yemeni people – as well as those of any other origin – led to his work as a photojournalist\, as it not only allowed him to spend the bulk of his time with everyday citizens but also to continue his skilled hobby as a photographer while receiving a subsistent wage.  A primary purpose of this exhibition is to not only celebrate the life of Luke– as a human being and as a citizen of the world – but to also appreciate the beautiful\, highly detailed and telling work that he created from 2011 to 2013. \nAfter Luke’s death\, the state of Yemen has only become direr.  Due to political corruption\, the former and present administration’s use of drone strikes\, as well as Saudi-led and U.S. backed sanctions\, airstrikes\, and bombings\, Yemen has been reduced to a deplorable state\, where malnutrition and youth mortality have skyrocketed.  Luke knew\, befriended and loved the very people who are now either gone or struggling for their survival.  Through this\nexhibition\, we will be providing a lens through Luke’s – and\, in turn\, our – eyes to the hospitality\, generosity\, beauty and sheer authenticity of the people of Yemen.  In doing so\, we hope to bridge the wide gap in understanding that defines our “us-and-them” mentality\, as well as to provide a glimpse into a day in the life of a Yemeni citizen. \nWe invite you to participate in a journey of Luke’s powerful and transformative years in Yemen.

SUMMARY:GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Fundraising Tournament & Community Iftar Meal
DESCRIPTION:Join RCF for GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser & Community Iftar Meal! \nFor 11 years the Rachel Corrie Foundation has proudly supported the Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football (Soccer) Tournament in Gaza. This program has grown from a small tournament to the all-encompassing Rachel Corrie Gaza Sport Initiative\, which includes a Young Men’s and Juniors tournament during Ramadan\, and a Tournament for Athletes with Disabilities in the winter. \nTo celebrate the success and growth of this initiative\, ensure its financial sustainability\, and connect the Olympia and South Sound community with our friends in Gaza and our local Muslim community\, we are excited to host GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser and Community Iftar Meal! \nOur objectives are simple! \nFundraise! The Gaza Sport Initiative has an approximate budget of $26\,000 for 2018. Our goal is to raise at least $5\,000 through team and player registrations\, generous donations\, food and t-shirt sales\, and community support. \nEducate! The situation in Gaza is more dire than ever before\, and Gazans have called on the international community to do their part in ending the occupation. We feel that it is our responsibility in the United States to educate our communities about how U.S. foreign policy and support for the Israeli government directly contributes to continuing the occupation. We’ll share more information about the current situation on the ground in Gaza\, and how efforts like the Gaza Sport Initiative positively engage Palestinians. \nRelationship Building! Like the Gaza Sport Initiative\, which focuses heavily on community building and strengthening bonds\, we want to extend the opportunity for community members to meet and build relationships with their Muslim neighbors through a community Iftar meal at our local mosque. An Iftar meal is the evening meal that breaks the fast for the day during the holy month of Ramadan. \nRSVP VIA OUR TICKETING PAGE!\nWe encourage individuals to take part in the tournament and the meal\, but participation is up to you! RCF kindly requests attendees to RSVP to the best of their abilities. These community events require planning\, staff time\, and funding to organize\, so the more accurate attendance numbers we have\, the better the events will be! \nOlympia Tournament Overview\nThis is a round-robin style tournament\, with four rounds and a championship finale game (teams determined by points scored). Games will be 30 minutes (15 minute halves) with a 15-minute break between games. Awards will be given to 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place teams. The tournament will be played at the RAC Sports Complex in Lacey on Fields #1 & #2. We strongly encourage spectators to bring blankets or folding chairs to view the tournament in comfort! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCATION HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF CHINOOK MIDDLE SCHOOL. \nTournament admission is FREE to the public\, with a suggested donation of $5. Please RSVP so we have an idea of the crowd size to expect! \nWant to Play? \nRegistration: Players may register as a team or individually. Teams may be 7-10 individuals\, with at least two women on the roster. Individual players will be assigned to teams with space available. All players must be 18+. \nFees: Team registration is $250\, individual registration is $40\, which may be paid via the ticketing page or through the RCF office (cash\, check\, and credit card accepted). All registration fees must be paid in full prior to the beginning of the tournament in order to participate. The registration and fee deadline is Thursday\, June 7th\, 2018. \nForms: In addition to payment\, we require registration forms and signed medical waivers for players. All forms must be completed and turned in for players to participate. \nA volunteer first-aid responder will be on site with a first-aid kit and the ability to assist in the event of an injury. Water will be available for all players. \nCommunity Iftar Meal \nThe Community Iftar Meal will take place at sunset at the Masjid al-Nur – Islamic Center of Olympia\, 4324 20th Way NE\, Olympia\, WA 98516.\n\nWe asked that you arrive no later than 8:30pm to receive a brief introduction/welcome by the mosque’s outreach coordinator\, Mustafa Mohamedali. After a brief welcome\, and since women and men do not break fast together\, the men will head to the basement of the mosque. The women will go to the original mosque adjacent to the current mosque.\n\nAs guests of the mosque\, we ask that people dress modestly and appropriately\, meaning no shorts\, tank tops\, athletic gear\, or other revealing attire. Guests will be asked to remove their shoes\, and women will need to cover their heads. Some scarfs will be available to borrow. Let us know if you have any questions about attire.\n\nAgenda:\n8:30 pm Arrive at Masjid Al-Nur/Welcome by Mustafa Mohamedali\n8:45pm Ladies proceed to the original mosque facility\, Men to the community hall.\n9 pm IFTAR MEAL\n9:06 – 9:45 Breaking of the fast followed by sunset (Maghreb) prayer and Iftar co-sponsored by RCF\n9:45 – 10:00 Cleanup and coffee allowing for women to proceed to community hall (basement at the mosque)\n10:00 – 10:45 RCF Presentation and Q&A by the Corries\n10:45 pm Close\nThe Community Iftar Meal is FREE to the public\, with a suggested donation of $10. Please RSVP so we have an idea of the number of guests to expect! \nALL FUNDS RAISED FROM THESE EVENTS WILL COVER THE COSTS OF THE EVENTS AND SUPPORT THE GAZA SPORT INITIATIVE \nLearn More About the Gaza Sport Initiative \nThe Gaza Sport Initiative transcends factional identities\, age\, gender\, and physical abilities to unite Palestinians together through sports for enjoyment\, play\, normality\, and community building. This grassroots initiative helps heal communities\, strengthens bonds\, and promotes nonviolence as a response to an ongoing military occupation\, siege\, and blockade. \nThe objectives are to provide a safe place for sports enthusiasts and athletes to gather and participate in athletic events\, encourage peaceful grassroots organizing\, affirm the place of the disabled in Gaza society\, and provide an opportunity for female athletes to participate in a public forum. \nThe enduring military occupation of Palestine is the primary issue addressed by the initiative. Individuals affected by ongoing siege and its associated trauma find positive role models and examples of community members addressing their immediate situation – working together\, creating healthy outlets to dispel stress\, and peaceful community relationship building. The initiative also reaffirms the place and value of the disabled and women participating in public forums. \n“The Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament is a celebration of the spirit of the Palestinian community in Gaza. It is an opportunity for people to get together\, for fleeting moments to look passed the scars of war\, the ongoing struggle under siege\, and the anxiety of the pain that is yet to come\, and seek unity\, togetherness and the love for sports. Gazans are resilient people. Their struggle is deep-rooted and recurring. But they always find a way to prevail\, and somehow to survive. \nThe Ramadan tournament\, which carries the name of Rachel Corrie\, whose memory is cherished by all Palestinians\, is one platform that helps Gazans articulate\, yet once more\, their insistence on their love for life\, and hope for the future\, despite every attempt at denying them life\, and depriving them of hope. It is a project that I fully support and endorse. It is pure in its intentions\, and noble in its message. Please support the tournament\, this year and every year.”\n– Dr. Ramzy Baroud\, Palestinian-US author\, editor and journalist.

We hope to see you there! \nCan’t make it but want to support the initiative? SUMMARY:Nakba Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Join RCF in Olympia on May 15th\, 2018 to observe the 70th anniversary of al Nakba\, or “the catastrophe\,” the widespread ethnic cleansing campaign against Palestinians perpetrated by Zionist forces leading up to the establishment of the State of Israel on May 15\, 1948. The campaign of ethnic cleansing displaced more than 750\,000 Palestinians and destroyed more than 400 of their villages. \nAs our Palestinian friends and colleagues in Gaza continue their incredible grassroots organizing efforts with the Great Return March in the face of extreme military violence\, it is more important than ever for international audiences to show our solidarity and support for their cause. We hope you can join us in our own community to highlight the need for global support of the right of return and ending the siege on Gaza. \nOLYMPIA OBSERVANCE ACTIVITIES \nRCF kindly requests attendees to RSVP to the best of their abilities. These community events require planning\, staff time\, and funding to organize\, so the more accurate attendance numbers we have\, the better the events will be! Click here to RSVP.  \nNakba Display\, WA State Capitol\, 11 am-5 pm \nRCF will display “Palestine: Stolen Homeland\,” a collection of tent-style placards inscribed with the names of Palestinian villages destroyed in 1948on the Capitol Lawns (next to the Tivoli Fountain) from 11 am-5 pm to educate the public about al Nakba and the Right of Return. \nThe installation was created by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign and has been installed at several sites across western Washington\, educating the public about the ongoing ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. \nHonoring the Great Return March\, WA State Capitol to Traditions Cafe\, 5-6:30 pm \n\n5-6 pm: Gather with RCF and fellow community members to view and pack up the Nakba display\, share stories\, and honor the Palestinians nonviolently demonstrating in Gaza.\n6-6:30 pm: At 6 pm we will walk silently as a group down from the Capitol to Traditions Fair Trade Cafe for a film screening of 1948: Creation & Catastrophe. This silent walk will honor those killed and injured in the Great Return March\, along with all the Palestinians around the world waiting to return home. (This is a sidewalk procession\, not a street march. Signs will be provided.)\n\nFilm Screening of 1948: Creation & Catastrophe\, Traditions Fair Trade Cafe\, 7-9 pm\nWe will screen the film 1948: Creation & Catastrophe at 7 pm. We’ll end with a list of ways we can support Palestinians at home and abroad with concrete action items. If you plan to attend the film\, we are asking for a $10 donation to cover the cost of film screening rights. You can make the donation via this ticketing page or at the door. Please note\, nobody will be denied admission due to lack of funds. \nAbout the film: \nThrough riveting and moving personal recollections of both Palestinians and Israelis\, 1948: Creation & Catastrophe reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. But rather than being a history lesson\, this documentary is a primer for the present. It is simply not possible to make sense of what is happening in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today without an understanding of 1948. This documentary is the last chance to hear first-hand accounts of what took place in Haifa\, Jaffa\, Dayr Yasin\, Acre\, Jerusalem\, Ramle and Lydda from the Israelis and Palestinians who personally fought in and fled from this land. These shocking and dramatic events reveal the core of what drives the conflict today. The documentary includes interviews with veterans\, refugees\, survivors and historians of the war collected in Palestine\, Israel\, Jordan\, Lebanon\, the United Kingdom\, Canada and the United States. Those who lived through the war are the centerpiece of the story\, but respected historians\, including Charles D. Smith\, Avi Shlaim\, Nur Masalha\, Benny Morris\, Ilan Pappe\, Rashid Khalidi and Sharif Kanaaneh provide context for the events. This is a free event\, and funds raised will support the international coalition’s purchasing of boats. \nSuggested donations begin at $15. \nABOUT ANN WRIGHT \nAnn is a retired US Army Colonel and former US diplomat who resigned from the US government in 2003 in opposition to the war in Iraq. A deeply committed peace activist\, Ann became active in Palestinian solidarity issues after visiting Gaza in 2009 after the 27-day Israeli war on Gaza\, worked with CODEPINK Women for Peace to bring six groups to Gaza in 2009\, and helped organize the Gaza Freedom March in December 2009 that brought 1350 persons from 40 countries to Cairo in solidarity with Gaza. \nShe has sailed on three of the more than two dozen Gaza flotillas–including the most recent 2016 women’s boat–carrying humanitarian aid and construction materials to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Ann will present an update on deteriorating conditions in Gaza and efforts to challenge Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. \nJoin us to hear from Ann about her experience on several previous Freedom Flotillas (2010\, 2011\, 2015\, & 2016) and the financial needs of this year’s initiative.
