SUMMARY:Movement Magazine II Launch & Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Palestine Action of the South Sound (PASS) invites you to the Olympia Ballroom for a night of festivities! From 5:00-9:00PM the event is jammed packed with activities\, performances\, speeches\, and food. You’ll have an opportunity to make donations that have a direct impact through Rachel Corrie Foundation by purchasing the zine or by making direct contributions\, and connect with members of the community. \nThis family-friendly event is open to the public.  A fee of $10 to $15 of the door would be appreciated\, but no one will be turned away for lack of money.  For your health and the health of those around you masks are encouraged. \nPlease RSVP here. \nInspired by a sold out benefit concert headlined by Bikini Kill on behalf of the Rachel Corrie Foundation and Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund\, the PASS Outreach and Education Committee released a zine called Movement Mag in conjunction with a Kimya Dawson event in February. Movement Mag is a project bringing together different voices and perspectives within the local movement for Palestine. Movement Mag documents the process of movement building\, collectivizes learning\, and provides a space for deep engagement and reflection. \nThe first issue of Movement Mag was a call into the void\, to see who was out there thinking about Palestine. With this second issue\, Movement Mag is saying\, “we found each other and are now asking”: \n\nWhere are we at?\nHow did we get here?\nWhere are we going?\nHow do we get there?

SUMMARY:Disturbing the Peace film screening
DESCRIPTION:Disturbing the Peace is a a film describing the origin and collaboration of Combatants for Peace\, a joint organization of former Israeli and Palestinian fighters who were born into conflict\, sworn to be enemies\, and who now work together to end the Occupation and to create a just and secure future for all who live on the same  land. \nIn a world torn by conflict\, Combatants for Peace have challenged their fate by stepping outside their own experiences and narratives about this conflict in order to also see it from other people’s perspectives. They see that there are not just two sides to the conflict\, but rather multiple narratives\, just as there are in every conflict in the world and in our own lives. \nCombatants for Peace work together through nonviolence.  Their eight regional groups\, as well as a theater of the oppressed and a women’s group\, are managed bi-nationally with Palestinians and Israelis working closely together.  They believe this is a model for post-conflict collaborations in the region.  Their work is always about direct action and is not just a dialogue group. The movie challenges all of us – to understand the narratives we live within\, to look at our current roles in our societies\, and to decide what role we are going to play in creating a more humane world for all.  And it starts with our willingness to disturb the peace!

SUMMARY:Book Tour: We Are Not Able To Live in the Sky - the seductive promise of microfinance
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, September 6\, 6:30 p.m.\, author Mara Kardas-Nelson\, who grew up here in Olympia\, will speak at New Traditions Fair Trade about her recently published book\, We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky. \nThe book is a deeply reported work of journalism that explores the promises and perils of microfinance\, told through the eyes of those who work in small-scale lending\, and women borrowers in West Africa. \nMara Kardas-Nelson’s We Are Not Able to Live in the Sky is a story about unintended consequences\, blind optimism and the decades-long ramifications of seemingly small policy choices that reverberate around the world. It is a story of poor women doing their best to make ends meet under the toughest circumstances\, and of international development workers\, funders\, and advocates who promise a brighter future with a quick-fix solution that may ultimately trap poor people in poverty. The book is rooted in deeply immersive narratives of women who take out microfinance loans in Sierra Leone. Their stories are set against a detailed history of American foreign policy and how that shaped the meteoric rise of Muhammad Yunus’ lofty vision\, as well as the gradual shift from non-profit to for-profit approaches across international development and within microfinance and what that means for poor people around the world. \nSavvina Chowdhury\, Evergreen State College professor of political economy and member of the local group Economics for Everyone\, will participate in a Q & A with the author after the talk. \nRead more here about the book\, and at the entry for September 6th at New Tradition’s website.

SUMMARY:In the Court of the Conqueror - George Emilio Sanchez
DESCRIPTION:In the Court of the Conqueror is a solo performance piece by artist George Emilio Sanchez with projections and visual storytelling by visual artist Patty Ortiz. Together\, they confront the history of how the courts have diminished the Tribal Sovereignty of Native Nations. \nThe piece also tells the story of Sanchez’s experiences of navigating generational trauma regarding his Indigenous identity while being raised in an Ecuadorian immigrant household. The work focuses on several Federal Indian Landmark cases\, leading up to the Johnson v. McIntosh 1823 Supreme Court case that applied the Doctrine of Discovery that still holds legal precedent in our courts of the conqueror. Sanchez and Ortiz traveled across hundreds of geographic miles and ancestral homelands to create this interdisciplinary performance that combines text and video projects to reveal this country’s ongoing conflicts with Native Nations in search of Indigenous justice and sovereignty. \nTickets: $35 \nGroups of 10+ can purchase by calling the Box Office at 253.346.1721. \nFind out more at Tacoma Arts Live
