Lebas de Cormant  \nSunrise in the Woods\, Gentil y rítmico\, 2018                                                             Virginia Yep  \nCommissioned by and dedicated to the Caulkins Guitar Duo \n  \nNeil and Tamara Caulkins \n \nNeil and Tamara Caulkins have been playing guitar together since they met during a guitar ensemble rehearsal many years ago. They went on to earn masters degrees in music at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. They then studied for a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid\, Spain\, with maestro Jose Luis Rodrigo. They received scholarships to study at the international Spanish music festival in Santiago de Compostela and the Manuel de Falla International music festival in Granada. Upon their return to the United States\, the duo recorded a critically acclaimed CD and pursued a rigorous concert schedule\, including performances in New York\, Calgary\, and throughout the southeast and pacific northwest. \nThe duo has commissioned several new works for two guitars including Three Cherokee Legends by Sarah Pierce\, Kootenai East\, Op. 56 by Michael E. Young\, Pentamerisms by Michael Daugherty\, and Water Leaves by Bruce Reiprich. \nA forgotten manuscript of duets by Isidro de Laporta (fl. 1790-1820) on the shelves of the Royal Conservatory library in Madrid introduced Neil and Tamara to a wealth of early nineteenth century music for two guitars. They are currently bringing this repertoire to life through research in archival sources and a study of historically informed performance practices on early nineteenth century instruments. \nAbout \n \nBenefiting the Palestinian Cultural Palace \nConcert ticket sales and donations will support the Palestinian Cultural Palace project in Gaza\, directed by Mohammed Baroud\, supervised by the Women’s Program Center-Rafah\, and supported by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice.  \n\n \n\n\nThis Gaza project provides a cultural\, developmental\, and social gathering place for youth that aims to sustain and celebrate Palestinian culture and to support the hopes and dreams of Gaza participants.  A team of male and female professional performers provide training in theater\, music\, dance\, and creative writing.  Youth develop performance skills\, stage professionalism\, and creative and constructive avenues for expression of feelings and energy\, and are encouraged to develop strategies for pursuing the peace that will provide for a safe life.  The project aims to support youth in developing their personalities\, expressing their needs clearly before officials and decision makers\, and to positively activate their role within the family and the larger society of their Palestinian homeland. \n\n\n\n\nAfter the project facility and supplies were destroyed by an Israeli military bombing in August 2018\, trainers have worked very hard to restore the spirit of the team and the work.  Phase one of the 2019 project this spring targeted 120 youth ages six to twenty-two and culminated in a festival that included “new dance\,” combining hip hop\, break dancing\, and other international dance forms with Palestinian folklore “to convey a global message that the Palestinian people have the right to practice their art and culture like all other countries of the world.”\n\n\nThe project indirectly targeted 5000 people\, including performance attendees\, those reached through networking with local institutions\, associations\, and schools\, and coordination with local and international media.  Festival attendance exceeded 2\,000 people and included more than 350 youth participant family members.  The project awaits funding for phases two and three which will take trainers into Gaza schools and communities to work with youth to create a “Colors of Peace” art exhibition and to engage thousands of Gaza youth in creating “Birds of Peace” messages and drawings.\n\nTo support this project\, join us for the musical benefit September 14th.  If you can’t make it\, you can still help by donating here.  Donations can also be made by check to the Rachel Corrie Foundation.  Put “Gaza Projects” or “Palestinian Cultural Palace” in the subject line and mail to the Rachel Corrie Foundation\, 203 East 4th Ave\, Suite 402\, Olympia\, WA 98501.

SUMMARY:Nakba Day Observance
DESCRIPTION:RCF NAKBA DAY OBSERVANCES \nMAY 15\, 2019 \nJoin the Rachel Corrie Foundation (RCF) in Olympia\, May 15\, 2019\, to observe the 71st anniversary of al-Nakba (in Arabic\, “the catastrophe).   This widespread ethnic cleansing campaign against Palestinians led to the establishment of the State of Israel on May 15\, 1948\, displacing more than 750\,000 Palestinians\, and destroying more than 400 Palestinian villages. \nAs Palestinian friends and colleagues in Gaza continue incredible grassroots organizing with the Great March of Return\, it is important for international audiences to connect and learn more.  Join us in Olympia\, May 15th\, for two events that explore the Nakba and how it continues and is challenged. \n  \nOlympia Observances \nPalestine: Stolen Homeland – Nakba Display \nWashington State Capitol Lawns near Tivoli Fountain \n(Northeast of the Legislative Building\, alongside Capitol Way on the west campus) \nWednesday\, May 15th \n11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nCome when you can and explore this display of tent-style placards with names of Palestinian villages destroyed in 1948 inscribed.  Talk with local Palestinian-Americans whose families experienced the Nakba and its aftermath\, and with RCF volunteers sharing how the Nakba continues and jeopardizes a just peace in the Middle East. \nThe installation\, created by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign\, has traveled to multiple Western Washington locations and will be displayed this month at Westlake Mall in Seattle and at the University of Washington\, as well. \nDefying the Walls that Divide Us –  Miriam Taqiedden and Gerri Haynes \nFirst Christian Church – Koinonia Hall \n701 Franklin St. SE\, Olympia\, WA \nWednesday\, May 15th \n7:00-9:00 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) \nJoin RCF for presentations and discussion about how the Nakba continues\, and hear from those who are Defying the Walls that Divide Us.  Miriam Taqieddin will compare and contrast events along Palestine’s borders with those along the US-Mexico border and will address the humanitarian and economic downsides of erecting a heavily militarized border wall.  Gerri Haynes\, of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR)\, will speak about health and medical conditions in Gaza\, the work of WPSR\, and the exchanges of knowledge and friendship that have occurred between medical delegates from the U.S. and medical personnel in Gaza.  Dr. Therese Saliba will facilitate discussion. The event is free to the public. Donations to support WPSR delegations to Gaza and RCF Gaza projects are welcome. \n  \nSpeaker Biographies: \nMiriam Taqieddin is a sophomore at The Evergreen State College\, focusing on law and public policy.  She is an emerging community activist who advocates for Palestinian liberation and immigrant rights in the U.S.  Upon graduating from Evergreen\, Miriam plans to attend law school and to study immigration law. \nGerri Haynes has a decades-long history in nursing and as a palliative care consultant\, grief and bereavement educator\, and bereavement support group facilitator.  Her experience includes critical care nursing and management\, and policy and curriculum development for care of children with life-limiting conditions. Her work in this area has been conducted at the Washington State Department of Health\, at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center\, and as project manager for a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to improve care for such children.  Her work has impacted families\, community providers\, hospital staff\, first responders\, and medical\, social work\, and nursing students. Gerri Haynes has traveled to parts of Palestine\, Israel\, Jordan\, Syria\, Iraq\, and Lebanon one to three times each year since 1993. Since 2009\, she has organized and led fourteen Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) medical service delegations to Gaza. \nFor information\, contact info@rachelcorriefoundation.org or call (360) 754-3998.

SUMMARY:JVP Seattle\, Monthly Mincha - The Torah of Angela Davis
DESCRIPTION:Join JVP Seattle on February 23rd from 2-4pm for another monthly mincha–JVP Seattle’s new monthly Shabbat learning session that is open to all. \n \nThis Black History Month we find ourselves at a moment ripe with opportunity to reinvigorate a vibrant spirit of Black and Jewish solidarity. They have asked us to gather across the country as well to show our solidarity. \nWe in Seattle will be honoring Angela Davis during our Saturday monthly Mincha on the 23rd! We will be reading from the Torah of Angela Davis\, a collection created by Jay Saper\, and will dream\, celebrate\, and commit to all of us getting free. \n\nWe will be gathering at Pipsqueak Art Gallery in the Central District\, which is a wheelchair accessible space. SUMMARY:Block the Wall Community Gathering and March
DESCRIPTION:We’re reaching out to invite you to our Block The Wall Community Gathering and March this Wednesday the 20th! We are participating in the nationwide #blockthewall mobilization in response to the recent state of emergency and border wall deal. We refuse to choose between Trump’s openly racist wall and the Democrats’ implicitly racist “smart border.” The differences between Trump’s border wall and a soft-power smart wall are variations on the same deadly theme. We choose another way: freedom of movement\, solidarity and mutual aid. Together\, we can demonstrate that we can build a better world. \nAt 4pm we’ll gather at Percival Park to meet and share food and hot drinks\, make signs\, and play games. Community groups and organizations are invited to table their materials. We would like to uplift groups that organize around migrant justice\, who do solidarity work at detention centers\, etc. If this is you\, please email us and let us know how we can support your work at this time! If you would like to table\, show up! Please bring whatever tables and canopies you might need. \nAt 5pm we’ll gather at Percival Landing to march through downtown with banners and signs and hand out informational leaflets. We are playing on the theme of “emergency” – wear high visibility vests and bring caution tape! We will be stopping momentarily at intersections along our route for folks to give speeches or perform acts. If you want to reserve a spot\, shoot us an email! \nWe hope you are able to attend this event. We need a bold\, positive vision of the future in contrast to Trump’s white supremacist fantasy. We need to create a world in which people can move freely\, where families can find refuge from danger\, and communities are brave enough to welcome newcomers and create shared sense of belonging. \nSee you on Wednesday! \n<3 Olympia Block the Wall\nolyblockthewall@riseup.net \nVideo for the National Call\nhttps://vimeo.com/317503449 \nFacebook event for Olympia\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/831044973910525/?ti=ia

SUMMARY:Lunch with Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei: Mental Health in Gaza Under Siege
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 16\, Olympia\, Washington \nVenue:  The Olympia Center\, Rooms 101 & 102 \nTime: Noon-1:00 p.m.  Bring your lunch! \nLocation: 222 Columbia St. NW\, Olympia\, WA 98501 \nMental Health in Gaza Under Siege \nPlease join RCF for a community lunch discussion to hear Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei\, psychiatrist and Director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) speak about psychological health in Gaza in 2018. Discussion will be facilitated by Dr. John Van Eenwyk. \nThe lunch is from 12-1 p.m.\, Friday\, November 16th\, at The Olympia Center\, Rooms 101 & 102\, 222 Columbia St. NW.  Guests are urged to arrive a few minutes before noon and to bring their lunches.  Coffee and tea will be provided.  Admission is free\, but please register so we can estimate attendance.  Donations are requested to support completion of GCMHP’s new building that will provide expansion of the organization’s vital treatment\, training\, and education programs. \nDr. Abu Jamei joined GCMHP as a student in the High Diploma Programme in Community Mental Health and subsequently served as a Psychiatrist-Clinical Supervisor and Director of Training and Research.  In 2014\, he was appointed Executive Director.  His particular interests include neuropsychiatry\, child and adolescent psychiatry\, and advocacy and policy change. \nOn July 21\, 2014\, during an Israeli bombing attack on Gaza\, a home of Dr. Yasser’s extended family was hit by a missile as family members were breaking their Ramadan fast with an iftar dinner.  Twenty-eight were killed\, including nineteen children and three pregnant women.  “There was no place for parents and children to hide\,” said Dr. Abu Jamei.  “You never knew where the bombs were going to fall.” Dr. Abu Jamei’s response was to continue his work at GCMHP.   “In Gaza\, you just have to start by doing something. Select anything that will do good\, and that is the right thing to do.” \nGCMHP provides crisis intervention and rehabilitation services to families in Gaza who have been traumatized by years of military occupation\, bombing campaigns\, blockade\, and siege.  This painful history coupled with extreme\, siege-induced unemployment rates makes the work of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme unique and timely in the world of global mental health.   Bring your lunch and join the discussion to learn more! \nThe Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice is proud to join our regional partners and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation in making this event and opportunity possible.

Shortly after that\, he was hailed by the UN’s Committee on Palestinian Rights as one of Palestine’s two best-ever cartoonists– along with the late Naji al-Ali\, and was featured in the exhibition and gala they staged at UN headquarters in New York. This year\, he has already made great appearances in Edinburgh and London. In late September\, his “History of Palestine” frieze was lauded as breakthrough art in the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights’ first-ever artists’ competition.\n\n\n\nTo keep up with the amazing flow of Mohammad’s creativity\, you can follow “@Sabaaneh” on Twitter or Instagram
