SUMMARY:The Exiled Palestinians: Stateless Palestinians from the Camps in Lebanon
DESCRIPTION:On May 14\, 1948\, as Zionist leader David Ben Gurion was proclaiming a Jewish state in Palestine\, his heavily armed troops seized the ancient Palestinian Arab town of al-Zeeb and drove out most of the inhabitants. Eighteen-year-old Mariam Fathallah was one of them. She and her young husband and their families were forced to flee to Lebanon\, along with most of the town. By the end of the year\, the 4\,000 year old community had been leveled to the ground. More than half the Arab Palestinians in Palestine were killed or expelled and more than half of the cities\, towns and villages of Palestine were made to disappear\, a crime that Palestinians call al-Nakba (the Catastrophe). \nMariam\, now 86 years old\, wants to meet you and tell her story in person. So does Amena Ashkar\,the granddaughter and great granddaughter of other Nakba survivors\, who has known no other home than refugee camps. \nCOME AND HEAR THEIR STORIES. COME AND ASK YOUR QUESTIONS. \nSponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace Tacoma and The Rachel Corrie Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sept. 12: Author Susan Abulhawa at Orca Books
DESCRIPTION:Susan Abulhawa\nSaturday\, September 12\, 2015\n1pm\nOrca Books Olympia\, WA\n&\n7pm\nElliott Bay Book Company Seattle\, WA\n  \nAbout  The Blue Between Sky and Water: \nIt is 1947\, and Beit Daras\, a quiet village in Palestine surrounded by olive groves\, is home to the Baraka family. Eldest daughter Nazmiyeh looks after her widowed mother\, prone to wandering and strange outbursts\, while her brother Mamdouh tends to the village bees. Their younger sister\, Mariam\, with her striking mismatched eyes\, spends her days talking to imaginary friends and writing. When Israeli forces gather outside the town’s borders\, nobody suspects the terror that is about to descend. Soon the village is burning and\, amidst smoke and ash\, the family must take the long road to Gaza\, in a walk that will test them to their limits. Sixty years later\, Mamdouh’s granddaughter Nur is living in America. She falls in love with a married man\, a doctor who works in Palestine\, and follows him to Gaza. There she meets Alwan\, the mother of Khaled – a boy trapped in his own body\, unable to wake up from a deep blue dream. It is through her that Nur will at last discover the ties of kinship that transcend distance – and even death. The Blue Between Sky and Water is a story of powerful\, flawed women; of relocation\, separation and heartache; of renewal\, family\, endurance\, and love. Susan Abulhawa brings a raw humanity and delicate authority to the story of Palestine in this devastatingly beautiful tale. \n \nSusan Abulhawa is a human rights activist\, a biologist\, and political commentator. She is the founder of Playgrounds for Palestine\, a children’s organization dedicated to upholding The Right to Play for Palestinian children. Her debut novel\, Mornings in Jenin\, was an international bestseller\, translated into 26 languages. She lives in Pennsylvania with her daughter and their beloved dogs.

SUMMARY:Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament 2015
DESCRIPTION:Friends\,\nToday is about Gaza. Today is about remembering those we lost last summer\, and honoring their lives. Today is about resistance. Today is about doing our part. \nAs our supporters know\, Rachel Corrie’s friends in Rafah\, Gaza\, have created and produced the Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament in her memory for the past seven years. The month-long amateur sporting event celebrates Ramadan by providing a festive atmosphere and a safe community space\, and it’s back again! \nIn 2014\, the tournament was delayed by the Israeli assault on Gaza\, but eventually over 300 players took to the field to demonstrate to the world that the spirit of Palestinian youth was not broken. Mahmoud Al Neirab\, a famous player who lost his mother and three sisters in an air strike bombing to their home insisted on participating despite his family’s tragedy\, and the audience encouraged him and appreciated his steadfastness and resilience. \nAfter Tamer Al Aydi\, a member of the tournament logistics team and a popular figure in the local football community\, was killed during the Israeli assault\, the al Ramla team took Tamer’s name for their own. Winning the tournament cup\, the team presented it to Tamer’s soul. Over three thousand spectators came out for the finale\, despite the tremendous hardship the Gaza community was facing. \nTournament organizers sent messages to us at the Rachel Corrie Foundation thanking each person who supported the project. Gaza Coordinator Adnan Abu Sa’ud wrote\, “With this tournament\, we have created a real way to strengthen personal connections in our community\, and with our friends around the world.” Although delayed as a result of the assault on Gaza\, the tournament fostered power and pride in a community under siege. \nDuring this special season of Ramadan and as the world remembers the events of a year ago\, the 2015 Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament is under way now! Commemorating Palestinian history and the 2014 assault on Gaza\, 32 teams\, featuring hundreds of players\, have chosen team names ranging from historic villages in Palestine to individuals killed during last year’s tragedy. \nThe Rachel Corrie Ramadan Sports Tournament is an inclusive space for persons regardless of physical ability.  From December 1-3 (in time for the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities December 3)\, part two will feature 150 disabled athletes participating in football\, table tennis\, sitting volleyball\, and basketball.  This inspiring event organized by Al Basma Club for the Disabled will provide a sport forum for the deaf\, amputees\, paraplegics and polio victims. \nOur Gaza friends remind us that it is important to support programs that build community and well-being there.  The Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament allows children and young teens affected by the ongoing occupation and its associated trauma to find positive role models – adults taking charge of their immediate situation\, working together\, creating healthy outlets to dispel stress\, and reaching out in a positive way to build community relationships. \nPlease remember and support our friends in Gaza who are resisting occupation and strengthening community through athleticism and sportsmanship.  Follow tournament developments at the website Gazalife.org and lend your financial support for all 2015 Rachel Corrie Ramadan Tournament events by donating now! \n\nMany thanks and Ramadan Kareem from all of us at the Rachel Corrie Foundation!

These powerful posters serve as a platform for understanding the effectiveness of boycotts as a nonviolent tactic to end injustice and oppression. \n\nThanks to the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Center for the study of Political Graphics (CSPG) for making these posters available! \nSponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation \n\n

SUMMARY:June 12: Ask Your Representative to Sign Congressional Letter Challenging Israel's Mistreatment of Palestinian Children
DESCRIPTION:The deadline for signing the letter is June 12th.\n  \nOn Tuesday\, June 2\, the American Friends Service Committee hosted a Congressional briefing on Capitol Hill to examine Israel’s child detention practices. The briefing was attended by more than one hundred people\, including 36 Congressional offices. \nIn response to concerns about Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children\, Representative McCollum has initiated a letter to Secretary Kerry calling on the State Department to make the protection of children a priority in the United States-Israel relationship. \nEvery year\, hundreds of Palestinian children – some as young as 12 years old – are detained and arrested in an Israeli military detention system where ill treatment and abuse is widespread. \nMany are taken from their families in night raids\, held without charges or due process\, and subjected to abuse and poor conditions while in custody.\n\n\n\n\nPlease call and write your representative today and urge them to sign this important letter before the June 12th deadline.  \n\nCLICK HERE TO TAKE ACTION! \n\nAlso\, please make a quick call to Representative McCollum’s office to thank them for leading this important initiative.\n(1-202-225-6631)\n\n\n\nThe Rachel Corrie Foundation is eager to support this effort\, because of our connections through the years with those who as children were imprisoned themselves or impacted by seeing young relatives imprisoned\, and raised into a reality that deprives them of a fundamental sense of freedom. \n\n\nThe “No Way to Treat a Child” campaign\, organized by the Chicago Faith Coalition\, is aimed at bringing attention to Israel’s routine mistreatment of Palestinian children.\n\n\n\nThank you to the American Friends Service Committee\, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation\, and many others for organizing and supporting this important effort.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n#NOWAYTOTREATACHILD

SUMMARY:May 21 Hatim Kanaaneh author of "Chief Complaint" in Olympia\, WA
DESCRIPTION:Hatim Kanaaneh from Arrabeh in the Galilee will be in Olympia May 21 to speak about his latest book Chief Complaint\, fictionalized short stories about life in his village. \nThursday\, May 21st 2015\n7pm\nOrca Books\n509 4th Ave E\, Olympia\, WA 98501\n  \n\nIn Chief Complaint\, Dr. Kanaaneh explores the changing\, precarious\, and ever-shrinking world of Palestinians living in Israel. As his village’s first Western trained physician\, Kanaaneh has had intimate access to his neighbor’s lives\, which he chronicles here in a fictionalized collection of vignettes. These compelling short stories reveal the struggles\, triumphs\, memories\, and hopes of the indigenous Palestinian community living in a state that does not acknowledge their past or encourage their future. \n\n\nDr Hatim Kanaaneh completed his medical and public health degrees at Harvard in 1970. He then returned to Galilee where\, in 1973\, he became the Public Health Doctor of the subdistrict of Acre. He is the founder of the NGO\, the Galilee Society (The Arab National Society for Health Research and Services).

SUMMARY:March 16: Remembering Rachel Corrie – Peace\, Justice\, & Dance at Olympia Ballroom with special guest Ronnie Barkan
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to our friends across the globe who joined us Monday\, March 16\, 2015\, to commemorate Rachel Corrie and her strong stand for justice twelve years ago in Rafah\, Gaza. \nWe were joined in Olympia by warm community\, and local poets and activists Lennée Reid and Rachel Greene.  Their words moved us to the emotional core of issues of social injustice prevalent today\, and echoed Rachel Corrie’s visions of equality. \n \nRonnie Barkan\, a longtime Jewish Israeli activist and cofounder of Boycott From Within\,  spoke of being inspired by the Corrie family\, and asked that we simply continue doing the work that we’re doing.  For peace anywhere will not happen in isolation to itself\, but needs our united commitment. \nThe Corrie family’s statement from Washington DC on March 16th\, where they were meeting with Department of State and Congressional officials\, echoed similar sentiments: “As we look back at Selma fifty years ago and Ferguson today\, we realize that our own civil rights struggle is not won in a single march or court case.  It is ongoing.  As our family continues our journey for justice\, we thank those across the U.S.\, the world\, and in Palestine and Israel who travel with us.  Together\, we will find justice for Rachel – both the justice she deserves and the justice for which she stood.” \nWith this\, all at the Rachel Corrie Foundation urge you to take action this month in solidarity with Rachel Corrie’s vision of justice\, peace\, and equality. \n\n\n\n\n\nTo read the full Corrie family statement click here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHuffPost Live – Rachel Corrie’s Parents on Their Daughter’s Legacy\nView here the interview by Marc Lamont Hill with Craig and Cindy Corrie that aired Monday\, March 16th\, from the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington DC.\n“No Justice for Rachel Corrie–or Palestine” \nRead here the article by Katherine Gallagher\, Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nSpecial thanks to the wonderful Yodelady and caller Anne Marie Schaefer for helping us dance our March 16th night away! \n \n\n\n“This has to stop.  I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop.  I don’t think it’s an extremist thing to do anymore.  I still really want to dance around to Pat Benatar and have boyfriends and make comics for my coworkers.  But I also want this to stop.”  Rachel Corrie \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information:\n(360)754-3998  info@rachelcorriefoundation.org

Utilizing the work of Reinhold Niebuhr\, Hedges describes the motivation that guides the actions of rebels as “sublime madness” – the state of passion that causes the rebel to engage in an unavailing fight against overwhelmingly powerful and oppressive forces. For Hedges\, resistance is carried out not for its success\, but as a moral imperative that affirms life. Those who rise up against the odds will be those endowed with this “sublime madness.” \n  \n\nChris Hedges is a columnist for Truthdig. A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, he spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America\, the Middle East\, Africa\, and the Balkans\, with fifteen years at the New York Times. He is the author of numerous bestselling books\, including Empire of Illusion; Death of the Liberal Class; War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning; and Days of Destruction\, Days of Revolt. He lives in Princeton\, New Jersey.

SUMMARY:Jan 20 @ 1:30 PM: WA State Supreme Court to hear Olympia Food Co-op Boycott Case
DESCRIPTION:The Right to Boycott \nWashington State Supreme Court to Hear \nthe Olympia Food Co-op Boycott Case (Davis v. Cox) \non January 20\, 2015 at 1:30 PM \nat the Temple of Justice\, Olympia\, WA USA \nAttorneys for the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) will be in the Washington Supreme Court\, defending the right of the Olympia Food Co-op to boycott Israeli goods. The co-op board was sued in 2011 by five of its members for the boycott decision. In 2012\, a judge dismissed the suit\, Davis v. Cox\, under the state’s anti-SLAPP statute\, a decision upheld on appeal in 2014. SLAPPs (strategic lawsuits against public participation) are brought to silence the defendants by burdening them with the costs and stressors of a lawsuit\, irrespective of the ultimate merit of the case. Washington State law protects against such infringement on the fundamental rights of free speech. At issue is not just the right of one institution to express its political beliefs and moral conscience through a boycott. The Olympia Food Co-op’s boycott is part of the international Boycott\, Divestment\, and Sanctions (BDS) movement\, a crucial tool in the struggle for Palestinian human rights. The suit in turn is part of a widespread\, well-funded effort to silence speech critical of Israel and supportive of Palestinian rights. CCR has long been fighting repression against people who speak out on behalf of Palestinian rights in the United States. They currently also represent Prof. Steven Salaita\, who was fired from his tenured job at the University of Illinois following his public criticism on Twitter of Israel’s assault on Gaza last year. \nComprehensive information about the case can be found at the Center for Consitutional Rights (CCR). \nWHAT:  Washington State Supreme Court to Hear the Olympia Food Co-op Boycott Case (Davis v. Cox) \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, January 20th at 1:30 PM. The hearing is expected to last about an hour. \nWHERE: Temple of Justice\, Olympia\, WA USA. The Temple of Justice (where the Supreme Court is located) is on the Washington State Capitol Campus about 100 yards to the north of\, and directly facing\, the Capitol Dome. The Temple is a white marble building with columns in front. See driving and parking directions. \nHOW TO PARTICIPATE: \n\nFrom noon until 1 p.m. (just prior to the hearing) stand along Capitol Way in a show of support for the Olympia Food Co-op and the right to boycott. If you can attend\, please RSVP info@rachelcorriefoundation.org or call 360-754-3998 and additional details will be provided.\n\n\nAttend the hearing. The hearing is open to the public. Please be seated prior to the 1:30 PM start time. Review the court’s rules of conduct and please remain respectful of the courtroom environment at all times.\n\n\nWatch the hearing live online on TVW at 1:30pm Pacific Time.\n\n\nFollow updates on Twitter!
