SUMMARY:Rock Therapy for People of Color Workshop and Evening Show
DESCRIPTION:Islamic punk (taqwacore) pioneers The Kominas are coming to Olympia from Boston to perform a show and present a workshop on their band’s history and how their message was twisted by white\, conservative media. They will also present their thoughts on the importance of creating a POC driven music scene. \nSince their earliest release in 2005\, The Kominas have found themselves in national controversy for singing about Muslim centric issues in a post-9/11 America. They were branded extremists\, radicals\, and terrorist sympathizers by conservative radio shows and blogs and were even highlighted on Fox News. However\, through the controversy\, The Kominas continue writing\, performing and touring in hopes of making the world re-examine their bigotry and islamophobia and to create a space for Muslim individuals within music scenes across the globe\, all through the medium of danceable punk\, funk punjabi\, and reggae. \nBrought to you by The Kominas\, Students Justice for Palestine\, and DiY Collective.

SUMMARY:"The Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine" with Ben Ehrenreich
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented By: The Palestine Festival of Literature; Jewish Voice for Peace – Seattle; and the Rachel Corrie Foundation \nAward-winning journalist and novelist Ben Ehrenreich presents a powerful\, damning\, grounded\, and beautifully written book about life in Palestine as it is being lived now\, The Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine (Penguin Press). This is immersion journalism at its best\, drawn from years spent throughout the West Bank. \n“It is all too easy to become overwhelmed by the glaring injustice and the difficulties a traveler encounters in the territories occupied by Israel but Ben Ehrenreich resists the temptation. He remains enraged but lucid\, eloquent and insightful. Of the voluminous amount of writing about the occupation this is one to treasure. He retains an intimacy with his subject without losing his critical distance. So much has been written about the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel but rarely with such vividness\, eloquence and success in illuminating complex historical and political realities. This is a superbly intelligent\, informative and critical book about one of the fundamental issues of our time.” —Raja Shehadeh. \n“In The Way to The Spring\, Ben Ehrenreich accomplishes an extraordinary feat of journalism.  His portraits of Palestinian resistance are luminous; his writing subtle\, meticulously documented and deeply human; showing the nuanced empathy that slashes through the best funded government propaganda. This is a necessary book.” —Molly Crabapple.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the late Daniel Berrigan and nonviolent Peace Activism. Watch the informative and inspiring documentary film “Hit and Stay.” \nOn April 30\, Dan Berrigan died shortly before reaching the age of 95. He and his late brother Phil were members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and courageous leaders of bold nonviolent peace activities from the 1960s onward\, especially opposing the Vietnam war and nuclear weapons and drawing upon their radical Catholic faith. \nTo help people learn more about the Berrigan brothers and this kind of nonviolent peace activism\, the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation will show the film “Hit and Stay” about this movement. We invite you to gather on Thursday evening June 16 at Traditions Café’ at 5th & Water\, downtown Olympia. \nEnjoy social time and finger-food starting at 6:30 pm. At 7:00 some Olympia folks who knew Dan will share some first-hand stories and insights about working with him. Then we’ll watch the 97-minute documentary film “Hit and Stay\,” which provides information and inspiration about recent decades of nonviolent peace activism. We’ll wrap up with a brief discussion. \nPrime sponsor: Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation\n(360) 491-9093 www.olympiafor.org \nCo-sponsor: Olympia Movement for Justice & Peace (OMJP)

SUMMARY:The Exiled Palestinians: Stateless Palestinians from the Camps in Lebanon
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 27th\, 7:00 PM\nBloedel Hall at St. Mark’s Cathedral\n(1245 10th Ave E.\, Seattle)\nOn May 14\, 1948\, as Zionist leader David Ben Gurion was proclaiming a Jewish state in Palestine\, his heavily armed troops seized the ancient Palestinian Arab town of al-Zeeb and drove out most of the inhabitants. Eighteen-year-old Mariam Fathallah was one of them. She and her young husband and their families were forced to flee to Lebanon\, along with most of the town. By the end of the year\, the 4\,000 year old community had been leveled to the ground. More than half the Arab Palestinians in Palestine were killed or expelled and more than half of the cities\, towns and villages of Palestine were made to disappear\, a crime that Palestinians call al-Nakba (the Catastrophe). \nMariam\, now 86 years old\, wants to meet you and tell her story in person. So does Amena Ashkar\,the granddaughter and great granddaughter of other Nakba survivors\, who has known no other home than refugee camps. \nCOME AND HEAR THEIR STORIES. COME AND ASK YOUR QUESTIONS.
