SUMMARY:Peace Works 2017
DESCRIPTION:From Marches to Movements\nOctober 14\, 2017\nKenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts\nSouth Puget Sound Community College\nOlympia\, WA\nDownload the\n	Peace Works 2017: From Marches to Movements Program	(3316 downloads	)\n\n\nThe last year has seen an alarming rise in armed conflict\, social bigotry\, and political authoritarianism. At the same time\, unprecedented numbers of people around the globe have rallied to resist the politics of hate. Many of us have felt fear and motivation\, isolation and empowerment\, disillusion and hope. Peace Works 2017 asks how we might harness these passionate feelings into effective social movements. \nWhat tools do community groups need to better organize themselves and network with others to meet vital needs? How can individuals become engaged and empowered in the political process to affect public policy? How have successful movements and campaigns shifted public opinion and won elections? How might we reach out\, build coalitions\, and turn a passion for peace and justice into strategic victories? How can we envision and craft policies and institutions for a better world even as we fight to preserve the gains of recent decades against reactionary and regressive forces? \nSaturday\, October 14\, 2007\, the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice will host its 11th Peace Works conference\, From Marches to Movements\, at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia\, WA. The day will be filled with workshops\, panel discussions\, presentations\, and networking opportunities. People and organizations from Washington and beyond will come together to develop concrete strategies for justice\, peace\, and progressive social change. \nPurchase tickets here! \nPeace Works 2017 SCHEDULE \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTIME\nPEACE WORKS 2017 SCHEDULE\nLOCATION\nSPEAKERS/PERFORMERS\n\n\n9:00 AM\nRegistration\nLobby\n\n\n\n\n9:30am – 11am\n\nMorning Workshops\nClassroom #\n\n\n\nStrengthening Sanctuary: Building Community in Support of Immigrant Rights\nRoom 130\nAnne Fischel\, Steffani Powell\, Alejandra Hunt\, Eder Nunez (Strengthening Sanctuary)\n\n\nNarrating the Future We Want to Create: Storytelling as Social Change\nRoom 285\nElaine Vradenburgh (Window Seat Media)\n\n\nVolunteer Recruitment & Retention: A Guide to Happy Volunteers\nRoom 286\nMiguel Pineda (SideWalk)\n\n\nWe don’t want Allies: The Meaning of Solidarity at the Intersections of Housing Status and Disability\nRoom 287\nWendy Hamlin\, Pete Brown\, John Gillis (Just Housing Olympia)\n\n\n11-11:15 AM\nBreak\n\n\n11:15-12:30 PM\nWelcome & Keynote Address\nMain Stage\nWhitney Faulkner (RCF) & Matt Remle\n\n\n12:30-1:30 PM\nLunch & Networking\nLobby\n\n\n\n\n1:30-3 PM\n\nAfternoon Workshops\nClassroom #\n\n\n\nHow to influence politics & make your government leaders represent YOU!\nRoom 130\nArsalan Bukhari\, Izdihar Bailey (CAIR-Seattle)\n\n\nLearn To Do Grassroots Fundraising and Change Your Life\nRoom 285\nCecile Surasky (Jewish Voice for Peace)\n\n\nDigital Communities\, Art & Activism\nRoom 286\nNatasha Marin (Reparations project)\n\n\nDisruption and Inscription: The Complementary Tension between Social Movements and Social Movement Organizations\nRoom 287\nShon Meckfessel (Author & Professor)\n\n\n3-3:15 PM\nBreak\n\n\n3:15-4:30 PM\nPanel (w/ Keynote speaker)\nMain Stage\nMatt Remle\, Cecilie Surasky\, Shon Meckfessel w/ David Hyde Moderating\n\n\n4:30-5:00 PM\nClosing: Takeaways\nMain Stage\nDavid Hyde\n\n\n5:00-6:00 PM\nClosing Reception & Networking (Live Music)\nLobby\nMiguel & Daniel Perez-Gibson (guitar)\n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here! \n  \nThank you to our Co-Sponsors! \nHarbingers of Justice \nRebuilding Alliance \nCindy and Craig Corrie \nPartners in Peace \nWorks in Progress \nFriends of RCF \nAmericans Committed to Justice and Truth \nJewish Voice for Peace – Tacoma \nCenter for Community Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) \nCommittee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) \nOlympia Fellowship of Reconciliation  \nOlympia Movement for Justice and Peace \nMaxine Fookson and Ned Rosch \nOrganizations interested in other co-sponsorship levels please go to our designated Cosponsor Page. SUMMARY:Trump and the Prospects for Peace - What is Next for Palestine/Israel? (Lafayette\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by the son of an Israeli General who believes that\, for the good of everyone\, the separation should end and be replaced by a secular democracy where Israelis and Palestinian live as equals in their shared homeland. \n6 to 7 pm reception\, refreshments provided\n7 to 9 pm presentation and Q & A\n9 pm book signing\, mingling \nThe indecisiveness and ignorance of the Trump administration and the bluntness of the Netanyahu government have changed the discussion on Palestine/Israel. No more Two State Solution\, but rather a Single state between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. The question now is this: Will it be a democracy with equal rights or an Apartheid State? \nMiko Peled is an Israeli born writer an activist. Born to a prominent Zionist family which includes a grandfather who was a signor of the Israeli declaration of independence and a father who was a general in the Israeli army. After a 30-year-career in teaching martial arts in California\, Miko found himself confronted with the Israeli Palestinian issue in all of its horror: His 13-year-old niece was killed by Palestinians in a suicide attack in Jerusalem. This brought about a major shift that Miko describes in his 2012 memoir\, “The Generals Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” Having sold his martial arts business Miko has gone on the road and is currently a sought out International speaker\, writer\, and activist working to promote justice and equality in Palestine. \nCost: $10 in advance\, $15 at the door.\nStudents free. SUMMARY:Going Against the Current Journey of an Israeli in Palestine (Petaluma\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:6 to 7 pm potluck dinner\n7 to 9 pm presentation and Q & A\n9 pm book signing\, mingling \nThe journey of an Israeli in Palestine is not a long one geographically\, but it is a significant one emotionally\, mentally and politically. Moving from one sphere to the other is difficult\, it can be frightening and one finds himself in unchartered territory. This is true of the return journey as well\, yet it is crucial to undertake this journey if one seeks to find common ground and peaceful co-existence. \nMiko Peled is an Israeli-born writer and activist. Born to a prominent Zionist family which includes a grandfather who was a signer of the Israeli declaration of independence and a father who was a general in the Israeli army. After a 30-year career in teaching martial arts in California\, Miko found himself confronted with the Israeli Palestinian issue in all of its horror: His 13-year-old niece was killed by Palestinians in a suicide attack in Jerusalem. This brought about a major shift that Miko describes in his 2012 memoir\, “The General’s Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” Currently\, Miko is a full-time writer and activist working to promote justice and equality in Palestine. \nEvent Cost: $20 payable to IONS and a dish to share if you can join our potluck from 6 to 7 pm.

SUMMARY:IMEU Benefit Dinner Honoring Michael Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Let’s come together to celebrate our achievements\, honor our supporters\, and rededicate ourselves to the critical work of shifting public opinion and growing support for Palestinian rights! Now in our second decade\, IMEU (Institute for Middle East Understanding) is as committed as ever to engaging the mainstream media to ensure that Palestinian voices and perspectives are heard. And we are thrilled to honor Seattle Seahawk Michael Bennett who courageously declined a propaganda tour meant to stifle such voices. It’s going to be an amazing evening and we can’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Gaza Committee Meeting - Seven Days from a Gaza Diary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fourth RCF Gaza Committee Meeting where we will be working with New Image Theater and Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign (SeaMAC) to present the play Seven Days from a Gaza Diary. We will be meeting at the home of our Board Member\, Farihan Bushnaq for dinner and to share stories of Palestinian struggle for recognition and homeland.\nArrive 6:30 pm for Dinner. Farihan will be making Mujedara\, a delicious Middle Eastern dish of chicken\, rice\, and lentils. \nPerformance: 7:00 pm with discussion to follow \nSeven Days from a Gaza Diary  \nOn December 27\, 2008\, a 27-year-old woman\, Khulood Ghanem\, was in Gaza City when Israel launched its massive\, three-week military assault on Gaza known as Operation Cast Lead. Khulood kept a diary\, making an entry about her experience every day of the assault. The first seven days of her diary have been adapted for a reading performance. \nThis event open to the public and we ask for a suggested donation of $20 for dinner and to help support our Gaza Projects. Spaces are limited. Please RSVP to jessica@rachelcorriefoundation.org so we can provide you with the address to the event.\n\nCurrent Situation: The people of Gaza are facing one of the most difficult periods since the Israeli military siege began ten years ago. Electricity provision is at an all-time low as a result of political calculations made by Israel and supported by the Palestinian Authority. As of July\, the average Gazan’s access to daily electricity dropped from four to six to as little as two to three hours a day.De-development of the Gaza Strip is making it unlivable. For more resources about Gaza head over to our Gaza Resource Page. \nIn order to devote needed and sustained attention to the deteriorating situation in Gaza\, the Gaza Committee will support RCF’s work in Gaza as well as emerging issues in Gaza.

SUMMARY:Crisis in Gaza - RCF Gaza Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rachel Corrie Foundation for the RCF GAZA COMMITTEE MEETING. We will be meeting at the Olympia Center (Room 101) on Saturday\, August 5th @ 10 am. We will provide a continental breakfast and (hopefully) a Skype call with our partners in Gaza! We hope to connect with Kareem Nasrallah and Ms. Ayyash from the Women’s Program Center Rafah to talk about the current situation and RCF projects that they’ve facilitated.\nCurrent Situation: The people of Gaza are facing one of the most difficult periods since the Israeli military siege began ten years ago. Electricity provision is at an all time low as a result of political calculations made by Israel and supported by the Palestinian Authority. As of July\, the average Gazan’s access to daily electricity dropped from four to six\, to as little as two to three hours a day.De-development of the Gaza Strip is making it unlivable. For more resources about Gaza head over to our Gaza Resource Page. \nIn order to devote needed and sustained attention to the deteriorating situation in Gaza\, the Gaza Committee will support RCF’s work in Gaza as well as emerging issues in Gaza. \nIn the event that we are unable to have a Skype call\, we will brainstorm strategies for a follow-up call and continue discussing how we as a community can support our friends in Gaza. \nThis event is free and open to the public. If you are planning to join us for breakfast we ask that you make a small donation that will go towards our Gaza Projects. Please RSVP to jessica@rachelcorriefoundation.org so we know how much food to provide.\n#EndtheSiege #GazaUnlocked

SUMMARY:Colombian activist Carmenza Tez-Juagibioy visits Olympia
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Defender from Colombia:\nFor the Earth\, For Life\, For Our Existence\nColombian activist Carmenza Tex-Juagibioy\, an environmental defender from the Kamentsa’ indigenous community in Colombia\, and Steven Bray\, former engineer of Caterpillar Corp. and member of the MRSCP (Madison-Rafah Sister City Project) and also Friends of Colombia Support Network-Madison\, will be traveling to PNW from April 12-16. Tex-Juagibioy and Bray recently returned to the U.S. from Colombia for a three-month speaking tour around the United States. \nThe purpose of her trip is to build ongoing connections with indigenous leaders\, non-profits organizations\, community members\, and activists to strengthen support and help connect indigenous struggles across borders involving human rights violations and environmental protection. Mining\, oil extraction\, pollution\, fumigation of crops in the name of the war on drugs\, and armed violence are parts of their life but the construction of the new highway through their sacred land in the Andes\, connecting the economy of Brazil to a Pacific port\, is at the center of their struggle. To learn more about the Putumayo region and the Kamentsa community check out this video featuring Carmenza\, “Valley of Sibundoy – Mining and Indigenous Resistance.” \nAt 6:30pm Carmenza will be giving a presentation followed by a Q&A. Come listen to her story and find out how you can support the Kamentsa’ indigenous community in Colombia. \n*Please bring a potluck item to share as we’ll be eating dinner promptly at 6pm when folks arrive. \n\nCarmenza Tez Juagibioy was born on November 27\, 1974 in the Ancestral Territory Carlos Tamoabioy\, which belongs to the indigenous nations Kamentsa and Inga\, known today as Sibundoy Valley\, state of Putumayo\, Colombia. She grew up in her home with her parents Maria Clara Juagiboy Chindoy and Nestor Tez Salazar. They lived in the rural neighborhood of Las Cochas\, where she went to elementary school. Her high school studies were started at the Normal School and at the Colegio Champagnat in the municipality of Sibundoy. In 2011 she was elected by democratic vote of the Kamentsa as a member of the governmental body of this population as Alguacil ii. She assumed this position\, that had a lot of challenges\, with courage to confront them\, demanding respect for the ancestral presence of indigenous people in the Territory. The same year she was elected by both the Inga and the Kamentsa as their delegate to advance in the process of complaint for the vulnerability on their territorial rights before the Independent Mechanism for Consulting and Investigation (MICI) of the Inter- American Development Bank (IADB). She was also part of the creation of the Minga de Resistencia for the collective rights of the Indigenous People of Putumayo\, Cauca and Nariño. In order to confront legal actions\, lead and accompany peaceful mobilizations against the Colombian state to claim their indigenous peoples’ territorial and collective rights\, she renounced her religious institution in 2012\, in order to continue her work as a citizen\, not only defending human and collective rights\, but also keeping up the processes for the territorial defense of the Kamentsa and Inga indigenous people and participating in the dynamic processes of social organizations in Putumayo. She has engaged in these activities in the firm belief that social processes are born from the effort and sacrifice of the people\, and in this way they can transcend their problems in time thanks to the efforts and sacrifice of the people. These efforts get stronger with the goodwill and generosity of persons who feel deeply desires for Justice and Equality\, along with the dream that someday their collective and human rights will become a reality.\nSteven Bray was an engineer for 36 years\, working on sustainable energy from 1977 through 1979 at General Electric Corporate Research in Schenectady NY\, then from 1980 through 2012 at Caterpillar\, Inc. in Peoria IL\, first in engine research then electronic controls. In October of 2011 Steven ended his engineering career the day he read an email from the CEO requesting that employees support the US free trade agreements with Colombia\, Panama\, and South Korea. At the same time\, Father Jose Restrepo had just been murdered after posting a video showing the imminent displacement of his community at Marmato in Colombia by a Canadian mining corporation. Steve’s employer\, Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of mining machines. Steve had global responsibility for software technology across the entire product line of Caterpillar machines and engines when he ended his career. Since 2012 Steve works independently and through multiple organizations toward a sustainable future with peace and justice. He has participated in these struggles within the Unites States\, the Middle East\, and Latin America.  He now lives in an indigenous community in the Andes Mountains of Colombia.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Gaza Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“I continue to believe that my home\, Olympia\, could gain a lot and offer a lot by deciding to make a commitment to Rafah…”\nRachel Corrie\, February 7\, 2003\n\nOn Monday\, April 10th\, as the people of Gaza continue their struggle for freedom\, we will mark Rachel’s 38th birthday and the 14th anniversary of her journey to the Middle East with an inaugural meeting of our RCF Gaza Committee. Join us at 6:30 p.m.\, at The Olympia Center\, Room 101\, 222 Columbia St. NW\, in downtown Olympia. Rachel Corrie brought us all closer to Gaza! The Rachel Corrie Foundation continues to be intimately connected to this place – a strip of land less than a quarter the size of Thurston County and home to nearly two million Palestinians (over 65% under the age of 25). We will explore the possibilities for learning about Gaza and strengthening our connections with the children\, youth and families who live there. Bring your questions and ideas about how we in Olympia can make a difference for Gaza and for our own community\, as well. All are welcome!\n\nHave questions?  Want to get involved\, but can’t make the Monday meeting?\nCall us at (360)754-3998 or email info@rachelcorriefoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Rachel Corrie Memorial Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to those who came out to celebrate Rachel and explore the lives of Palestinian women through film!\nWe were able to remember and recommit in building community with Gaza. Check out the photos below of some of the messages our guests had to those in Gaza.  \nA message from Cindy & Craig Corrie\, March 16\, 2017 \n\n \n \n \n \n\nNote: These photos express the opinions and views of individuals and not the official position of the Rachel Corrie Foundation.\n Community Potluck & Film Screening\n\nFirst Christian Church\, Koinonia Hall \n701 Franklin St SE\, in downtown Olympia \nJoin the Rachel Corrie Foundation Thursday\, March 16th\, to remember and reflect upon Rachel Corrie’s stand in Gaza fourteen years ago\, and upon all those who continue to live and struggle there\, particularly women. This annual event will focus on the women of Palestine and will include a film screening of In the Image: Palestinian Women Capture the Occupation\, followed by a Skype call (Q&A) with Director and Co-producer Emmy Scharlatt. If you’re able\, please bring a potluck item to share. Join us as we observe International Women’s Day March 8th and continue our celebration of women March 16th as we remember Rachel and continue the work she inspired for peace with justice.\n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nIn the Image\, explores the daily lives of Palestinian women living in the occupied West Bank. The film portrays their stories in a novel and eye-opening manner; through video footage captured by the women themselves. \nIn the Image gives voice to each woman’s experience: Ayat\, Salam\, and Nariman are three of the participants in The Camera Project\, an initiative launched by the Jerusalem-based human rights organization B’Tselem. This project is a unique collaboration of Palestinians and Israelis who seek to use footage captured by Palestinians to fight for justice in the West Bank. Palestinian volunteers are given video cameras to capture the human rights violations to which they are subjected. They are taught how to use the cameras and record the brutality that is a part of their daily lives. In agreeing to help expose the abuses suffered at the hands of the Israeli settlers and military personnel\, these women put themselves and their families at risk and face harassment or retribution for seeking to expose the violence. Their perseverance is inspiring\, as they continue to work for change\, attempting to pave the way for future peace in the region. The women in In The Image are not only fighting for the rights of Palestinians but also for the rights of women all over the world.
