DESCRIPTION:Join RCF for GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser & Community Iftar Meal! \nFor 11 years the Rachel Corrie Foundation has proudly supported the Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football (Soccer) Tournament in Gaza. This program has grown from a small tournament to the all-encompassing Rachel Corrie Gaza Sport Initiative\, which includes a Young Men’s and Juniors tournament during Ramadan\, and a Tournament for Athletes with Disabilities in the winter. \nTo celebrate the success and growth of this initiative\, ensure its financial sustainability\, and connect the Olympia and South Sound community with our friends in Gaza and our local Muslim community\, we are excited to host GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser and Community Iftar Meal! \nOur objectives are simple! \nFundraise! The Gaza Sport Initiative has an approximate budget of $26\,000 for 2018. Our goal is to raise at least $5\,000 through team and player registrations\, generous donations\, food and t-shirt sales\, and community support. \nEducate! The situation in Gaza is more dire than ever before\, and Gazans have called on the international community to do their part in ending the occupation. We feel that it is our responsibility in the United States to educate our communities about how U.S. foreign policy and support for the Israeli government directly contributes to continuing the occupation. We’ll share more information about the current situation on the ground in Gaza\, and how efforts like the Gaza Sport Initiative positively engage Palestinians. \nRelationship Building! Like the Gaza Sport Initiative\, which focuses heavily on community building and strengthening bonds\, we want to extend the opportunity for community members to meet and build relationships with their Muslim neighbors through a community Iftar meal at our local mosque. An Iftar meal is the evening meal that breaks the fast for the day during the holy month of Ramadan. \nRSVP VIA OUR TICKETING PAGE!\nWe encourage individuals to take part in the tournament and the meal\, but participation is up to you! RCF kindly requests attendees to RSVP to the best of their abilities. These community events require planning\, staff time\, and funding to organize\, so the more accurate attendance numbers we have\, the better the events will be! \nOlympia Tournament Overview\nThis is a round-robin style tournament\, with four rounds and a championship finale game (teams determined by points scored). Games will be 30 minutes (15 minute halves) with a 15-minute break between games. Awards will be given to 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place teams. The tournament will be played at the RAC Sports Complex in Lacey on Fields #1 & #2. We strongly encourage spectators to bring blankets or folding chairs to view the tournament in comfort! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCATION HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF CHINOOK MIDDLE SCHOOL. \nTournament admission is FREE to the public\, with a suggested donation of $5. Please RSVP so we have an idea of the crowd size to expect! \nWant to Play? \nRegistration: Players may register as a team or individually. Teams may be 7-10 individuals\, with at least two women on the roster. Individual players will be assigned to teams with space available. All players must be 18+. \nFees: Team registration is $250\, individual registration is $40\, which may be paid via the ticketing page or through the RCF office (cash\, check\, and credit card accepted). All registration fees must be paid in full prior to the beginning of the tournament in order to participate.The registration and fee deadline is Thursday\, June 7th\, 2018. \nForms: In addition to payment\, we require registration forms and signed medical waivers for players. All forms must be completed and turned in for players to participate. \nA volunteer first-aid responder will be on site with a first-aid kit and the ability to assist in the event of an injury. Water will be available for all players. \nCommunity Iftar Meal \nThe Community Iftar Meal will take place at sunset at the Masjid al-Nur – Islamic Center of Olympia\, 4324 20th Way NE\, Olympia\, WA 98516.\n\nWe asked that you arrive no later than 8:30pm to receive a brief introduction/welcome by the mosque’s outreach coordinator\, Mustafa Mohamedali. After a brief welcome\, and since women and men do not break fast together\, the men will head to the basement of the mosque. The women will go to the original mosque adjacent to the current mosque.\n\nAs guests of the mosque\, we ask that people dress modestly and appropriately\, meaning no shorts\, tank tops\, athletic gear\, or other revealing attire. Guests will be asked to remove their shoes\, and women will need to cover their heads. Some scarfs will be available to borrow. Individuals affected by ongoing siege and its associated trauma find positive role models and examples of community members addressing their immediate situation – working together\, creating healthy outlets to dispel stress\, and peaceful community relationship building. The initiative also reaffirms the place and value of the disabled and women participating in public forums. \n“The Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament is a celebration of the spirit of the Palestinian community in Gaza. DESCRIPTION:Join RCF in Olympia on May 15th\, 2018 to observe the 70th anniversary of al Nakba\, or “the catastrophe\,” the widespread ethnic cleansing campaign against Palestinians perpetrated by Zionist forces leading up to the establishment of the State of Israel on May 15\, 1948. The campaign of ethnic cleansing displaced more than 750\,000 Palestinians and destroyed more than 400 of their villages. \nAs our Palestinian friends and colleagues in Gaza continue their incredible grassroots organizing efforts with the Great Return March in the face of extreme military violence\, it is more important than ever for international audiences to show our solidarity and support for their cause. We hope you can join us in our own community to highlight the need for global support of the right of return and ending the siege on Gaza. \nOLYMPIA OBSERVANCE ACTIVITIES \nRCF kindly requests attendees to RSVP to the best of their abilities. Click here to RSVP.  \nNakba Display\, WA State Capitol\, 11 am-5 pm \nRCF will display “Palestine: Stolen Homeland\,” a collection of tent-style placards inscribed with the names of Palestinian villages destroyed in 1948on the Capitol Lawns (next to the Tivoli Fountain) from 11 am-5 pm to educate the public about al Nakba and the Right of Return. \nThe installation was created by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign and has been installed at several sites across western Washington\, educating the public about the ongoing ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. \nHonoring the Great Return March\, WA State Capitol to Traditions Cafe\, 5-6:30 pm \n\n5-6 pm: Gather with RCF and fellow community members to view and pack up the Nakba display\, share stories\, and honor the Palestinians nonviolently demonstrating in Gaza.\n6-6:30 pm: At 6 pm we will walk silently as a group down from the Capitol to Traditions Fair Trade Cafe for a film screening of 1948: Creation & Catastrophe. This silent walk will honor those killed and injured in the Great Return March\, along with all the Palestinians around the world waiting to return home. (This is a sidewalk procession\, not a street march. Signs will be provided.)\n\nFilm Screening of 1948: Creation & Catastrophe\, Traditions Fair Trade Cafe\, 7-9 pm\nWe will screen the film 1948: Creation & Catastrophe at 7 pm. We’ll end with a list of ways we can support Palestinians at home and abroad with concrete action items. If you plan to attend the film\, we are asking for a $10 donation to cover the cost of film screening rights. You can make the donation via this ticketing page or at the door. This is a free event\, and funds raised will support the international coalition’s purchasing of boats. \nSuggested donations begin at $15. \nABOUT ANN WRIGHT \nAnn is a retired US Army Colonel and former US diplomat who resigned from the US government in 2003 in opposition to the war in Iraq. A deeply committed peace activist\, Ann became active in Palestinian solidarity issues after visiting Gaza in 2009 after the 27-day Israeli war on Gaza\, worked with CODEPINK Women for Peace to bring six groups to Gaza in 2009\, and helped organize the Gaza Freedom March in December 2009 that brought 1350 persons from 40 countries to Cairo in solidarity with Gaza. \nShe has sailed on three of the more than two dozen Gaza flotillas–including the most recent 2016 women’s boat–carrying humanitarian aid and construction materials to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Ann will present an update on deteriorating conditions in Gaza and efforts to challenge Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. \nJoin us to hear from Ann about her experience on several previous Freedom Flotillas (2010\, 2011\, 2015\, & 2016) and the financial needs of this year’s initiative.

Huwaida is the former Chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement\, and from August to December 2008\, led 5 successful sea voyages to the Gaza Strip to confront and challenge Israel’s illegal blockade on the 2 million Palestinians living there. Huwaida is co-editor of the book “Peace Under Fire: Israel\, Palestine\, and the International Solidarity Movement.” She currently practices civil rights law in Detroit. \nRachel Corrie was a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia\, Washington\, who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer on 16 March 2003\, while undertaking nonviolent direct action to protect the home of a Palestinian family from demolition.

He taught mass communication at Australia’s Curtin University of Technology\, Malaysia Campus. He has been a guest speaker at many top universities around the world and conducted book tours in over twenty countries. \nTHE LAST EARTH is a non-fictional narrative of modern Palestinian history. It is a unique rendition of people’s history – an account of how major historic events in Palestine and the greater Middle East impacted ordinary people\, as well as how that mass of people\, in their tenacity\, and even in their dispossession\, represent a force that determines history. \nMixing the academic discipline of ‘History from Below’ and a refined literary style\, this collection of narrative-based accounts challenges the perception that Palestinians\, mostly refugees\, are irrelevant in shaping their own history and the attempt by Zionist historians and institutions to replace the Palestinian historical narrative with a Zionist one. \nIts nine chapters contain complex characters whose stories overlap\, creating echo after resounding echo of their profound collective experience. DESCRIPTION:Presentation by the son of an Israeli General who believes that\, for the good of everyone\, the separation should end and be replaced by a secular democracy where Israelis and Palestinian live as equals in their shared homeland. \n6 to 7 pm reception\, refreshments provided\n7 to 9 pm presentation and Q & A\n9 pm book signing\, mingling \nThe indecisiveness and ignorance of the Trump administration and the bluntness of the Netanyahu government have changed the discussion on Palestine/Israel. No more Two State Solution\, but rather a Single state between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. The question now is this: Will it be a democracy with equal rights or an Apartheid State? \nMiko Peled is an Israeli born writer an activist. Born to a prominent Zionist family which includes a grandfather who was a signor of the Israeli declaration of independence and a father who was a general in the Israeli army. After a 30-year-career in teaching martial arts in California\, Miko found himself confronted with the Israeli Palestinian issue in all of its horror: His 13-year-old niece was killed by Palestinians in a suicide attack in Jerusalem. This brought about a major shift that Miko describes in his 2012 memoir\, “The Generals Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” Having sold his martial arts business Miko has gone on the road and is currently a sought out International speaker\, writer\, and activist working to promote justice and equality in Palestine. \nCost: $10 in advance\, $15 at the door.\nStudents free. Stay tuned for more information. \nDusty Knobel: Since 1975\, discerning designers\, homeowners\, and fellow artists have turned to Knobel Woodworks for custom furniture\, cabinets and millwork not available anywhere else. Dusty has trained with internationally known makers like John Makepeace\, Allen Peters\, and James Krenov. Several national publications have featured his work including Fine Wood Working magazine and the Taunton Press Design Book Series\, and he has shown pieces in Seattle at the Gallery of Fine Working and at the Washington State Museum. \nCheck out more of his work at his website.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fourth RCF Gaza Committee Meeting where we will be working with New Image Theater and Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign (SeaMAC) to present the play Seven Days from a Gaza Diary. We will be meeting at the home of our Board Member\, Farihan Bushnaq for dinner and to share stories of Palestinian struggle for recognition and homeland.\nArrive 6:30 pm for Dinner. Farihan will be making Mujedara\, a delicious Middle Eastern dish of chicken\, rice\, and lentils. \nPerformance: 7:00 pm with discussion to follow \nSeven Days from a Gaza Diary  \nOn December 27\, 2008\, a 27-year-old woman\, Khulood Ghanem\, was in Gaza City when Israel launched its massive\, three-week military assault on Gaza known as Operation Cast Lead. Khulood kept a diary\, making an entry about her experience every day of the assault. The first seven days of her diary have been adapted for a reading performance. \nThis event open to the public and we ask for a suggested donation of $20 for dinner and to help support our Gaza Projects. Please RSVP to jessica@rachelcorriefoundation.org so we can provide you with the address to the event.\n\nCurrent Situation: The people of Gaza are facing one of the most difficult periods since the Israeli military siege began ten years ago. Electricity provision is at an all-time low as a result of political calculations made by Israel and supported by the Palestinian Authority. As of July\, the average Gazan’s access to daily electricity dropped from four to six to as little as two to three hours a day.De-development of the Gaza Strip is making it unlivable. We welcome you to enjoy light refreshments and the opportunity to chat with Whitney\, the Corries\, and the rest of RCF staff and board members.\nAbout Whitney\nWhitney Faulkner is the first Executive Director at the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (RCF). She is a lifelong Northwest resident and started volunteering with the Rachel Corrie Foundation in 2005. \nWhitney was raised in Wenatchee\, Washington. She moved to Olympia in 2004 to attend The Evergreen State College and in 2008 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with emphasis in Middle Eastern Studies and Political Economics. \nFrom 2007 to 2011\, Whitney worked in Aleppo\, Syria\, and traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa. She has volunteered internationally in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, and locally at the Family Support Center\, SafePlace\, and the Crisis Clinic of Thurston and Mason Counties. Prior to coming to the Rachel Corrie Foundation\, Whitney served as the Training Coordinator for The Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys – Support Enforcement Project (WAPA-SEP). \nWhitney enjoys the company of friends and family and recharges her batteries by running\, hiking\, and camping her way around the great Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY:Working Towards Health and Equity: Stories from Partners in Health in Sierra Leone
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear stories from the fight for better access to health care\, and a more equitable world\, from Sierra Leone\, West Africa. Mara Kardas-Nelson is the Director of Community-Based Programs at Partners in Heath (PIH) in Sierra Leone. She will speak about PIH’s work in the country\, from its initial efforts in the fight against Ebola to its current work strengthening the country’s health system. PIH’s work is rooted in social justice\, with the belief that the world’s poorest also deserve the world’s best healthcare. Mara will speak about the organization’s community-based work with Ebola survivors\, people living with HIV and TB\, and the country’s poorest and most marginalized. PIH’s project in Sierra Leone is part of the organization’s work in many different regions to support equitable health care at a time when international health care is being defunded and undermined. \n*This is not an RCF sponsored event.
