SUMMARY:Up Against the Walls-USA to Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join RCF in welcoming Susan Green\, Art Forces founder\, for a presentation on multimedia murals and stories of communities using art to resist colonial occupation and manifest visions for justice. Art Forces\, working in partnership with grassroots community groups\, uses community public art and technology\, including murals\, websites\, social and new media\, to inspire critical thinking and action. From the streets of San Francisco Bay Area to Olympia Washington\, to refugee camps of Palestine and Lebanon\, the projects make visible histories and relationships that have been obliterated and forgotten\, making connections to national and global issues of social and environmental justice\, borders\, precarity\, migrations\, and decolonization. \nThe presentation will include a 22-minute in-progress video of community murals in Silwan East Jerusalem\, called “Our Streets–My Homeland is Not a Suitcase”. The Palestinian village of Silwan\, East Jerusalem\, daily resists escalating attacks by Israel\, the goals of which include the expulsion of the entire Palestinian population. In 2015\, as part of its struggle against dispossession\, the Silwan community worked with international artists to paint 1500 square feet of public murals embodying their identity\, history\, culture\, and determination to remain on their land. \nAdmission is FREE! Donations will benefit the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural Project. \nSUSAN GREENE is an internationally-known interdisciplinary artist\, educator\, and clinical psychologist. Her practice traverses cultural arenas\, focusing on borders\, migrations\, feminism\, decolonization\, trauma\, and memory. She conducts research on intersections of trauma\, creativity\, resilience\, and resistance through multimedia projects she directs with Art Forces\, which she founded in 2001. Sites of her 50+ public art installations span West Bank and Gaza\, Palestine and refugee camps in Lebanon to the streets of San Francisco and Oakland CA. Greene initiated and directs the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural Project in downtown Olympia.

SUMMARY:"A Day in the Life of Yemen" Luke Somers Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Rachel Corrie Foundation is honored to present the photography exhibit\, “A Day in the Life of Yemen”\, showcasing the work of the late photojournalist Luke Somers for the month of September 2018 at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501) in partnership with the Olympia Film Society. \nAbout Luke Somers \nLuke Somers\, a British-born American freelance photographic journalist and resident of Yemen\, was killed in a failed raid attempt in December 2014\, one year and three months after his abduction by armed tribesmen. Luke arrived in Sana’a\, Yemen in 2011 as an English teacher; and\, although revered by his students and colleagues\, Luke began to shift gears into photojournalism\, bearing witness to the visceral realities – both bleak and inspiring – of the country\, as well as the cultural phenomena of the Arab Spring as it swept through the region. \nAs time unraveled\, Luke became a full-time freelance journalist who worked for several Yemeni newspaper outlets throughout Sana’a\, including National Yemen and Yemen Times.  In the process\, Luke began submitting photo essays to prestigious news organizations\, including The New York Times\, Al Jazeera\, BBC and NPR\, highlighting cultural\, personal and political facets of the country’s people.  Luke spent much of his time in Tent City\, Change Square – the protestors’ main area of living and congregating – where he had spent countless hours\, days\, weeks and\nmonths sharing food\, plans\, conversation\, and stories.  This was Luke’s home. \nPurpose of the Exhibit \nLuke\, amid his many human qualities\, was a thoughtful\, intensely passionate\, sensitive soul who arrived in Yemen with no agenda but to simply be.  His authentic and outgoing outlook toward the Yemeni people – as well as those of any other origin – led to his work as a photojournalist\, as it not only allowed him to spend the bulk of his time with everyday citizens but also to continue his skilled hobby as a photographer while receiving a subsistent wage.  A primary purpose of this exhibition is to not only celebrate the life of Luke– as a human being and as a citizen of the world – but to also appreciate the beautiful\, highly detailed and telling work that he created from 2011 to 2013. \nAfter Luke’s death\, the state of Yemen has only become direr.  Due to political corruption\, the former and present administration’s use of drone strikes\, as well as Saudi-led and U.S. backed sanctions\, airstrikes\, and bombings\, Yemen has been reduced to a deplorable state\, where malnutrition and youth mortality have skyrocketed.  Luke knew\, befriended and loved the very people who are now either gone or struggling for their survival.  Through this\nexhibition\, we will be providing a lens through Luke’s – and\, in turn\, our – eyes to the hospitality\, generosity\, beauty and sheer authenticity of the people of Yemen.  In doing so\, we hope to bridge the wide gap in understanding that defines our “us-and-them” mentality\, as well as to provide a glimpse into a day in the life of a Yemeni citizen. \nWe invite you to participate in a journey of Luke’s powerful and transformative years in Yemen.

SUMMARY:GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Fundraising Tournament & Community Iftar Meal
DESCRIPTION:Join RCF for GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser & Community Iftar Meal! \nFor 11 years the Rachel Corrie Foundation has proudly supported the Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football (Soccer) Tournament in Gaza. This program has grown from a small tournament to the all-encompassing Rachel Corrie Gaza Sport Initiative\, which includes a Young Men’s and Juniors tournament during Ramadan\, and a Tournament for Athletes with Disabilities in the winter. \nTo celebrate the success and growth of this initiative\, ensure its financial sustainability\, and connect the Olympia and South Sound community with our friends in Gaza and our local Muslim community\, we are excited to host GOALS FOR GAZA: Olympia Ramadan Soccer Tournament Fundraiser and Community Iftar Meal! \nOur objectives are simple! \nFundraise! The Gaza Sport Initiative has an approximate budget of $26\,000 for 2018. Our goal is to raise at least $5\,000 through team and player registrations\, generous donations\, food and t-shirt sales\, and community support. \nEducate! The situation in Gaza is more dire than ever before\, and Gazans have called on the international community to do their part in ending the occupation. We feel that it is our responsibility in the United States to educate our communities about how U.S. foreign policy and support for the Israeli government directly contributes to continuing the occupation. We’ll share more information about the current situation on the ground in Gaza\, and how efforts like the Gaza Sport Initiative positively engage Palestinians. \nRelationship Building! Like the Gaza Sport Initiative\, which focuses heavily on community building and strengthening bonds\, we want to extend the opportunity for community members to meet and build relationships with their Muslim neighbors through a community Iftar meal at our local mosque. An Iftar meal is the evening meal that breaks the fast for the day during the holy month of Ramadan. \nRSVP VIA OUR TICKETING PAGE!\nWe encourage individuals to take part in the tournament and the meal\, but participation is up to you! RCF kindly requests attendees to RSVP to the best of their abilities. These community events require planning\, staff time\, and funding to organize\, so the more accurate attendance numbers we have\, the better the events will be! \nOlympia Tournament Overview\nThis is a round-robin style tournament\, with four rounds and a championship finale game (teams determined by points scored). Games will be 30 minutes (15 minute halves) with a 15-minute break between games. Awards will be given to 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place teams. The tournament will be played at the RAC Sports Complex in Lacey on Fields #1 & #2. We strongly encourage spectators to bring blankets or folding chairs to view the tournament in comfort! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LOCATION HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF CHINOOK MIDDLE SCHOOL. \nTournament admission is FREE to the public\, with a suggested donation of $5. Please RSVP so we have an idea of the crowd size to expect! \nWant to Play? \nRegistration: Players may register as a team or individually. Teams may be 7-10 individuals\, with at least two women on the roster. Individual players will be assigned to teams with space available. All players must be 18+. \nFees: Team registration is $250\, individual registration is $40\, which may be paid via the ticketing page or through the RCF office (cash\, check\, and credit card accepted). All registration fees must be paid in full prior to the beginning of the tournament in order to participate. The registration and fee deadline is Thursday\, June 7th\, 2018. \nForms: In addition to payment\, we require registration forms and signed medical waivers for players. All forms must be completed and turned in for players to participate. \nA volunteer first-aid responder will be on site with a first-aid kit and the ability to assist in the event of an injury. Water will be available for all players. \nCommunity Iftar Meal \nThe Community Iftar Meal will take place at sunset at the Masjid al-Nur – Islamic Center of Olympia\, 4324 20th Way NE\, Olympia\, WA 98516.\n\nWe asked that you arrive no later than 8:30pm to receive a brief introduction/welcome by the mosque’s outreach coordinator\, Mustafa Mohamedali. After a brief welcome\, and since women and men do not break fast together\, the men will head to the basement of the mosque. The women will go to the original mosque adjacent to the current mosque.\n\nAs guests of the mosque\, we ask that people dress modestly and appropriately\, meaning no shorts\, tank tops\, athletic gear\, or other revealing attire. Guests will be asked to remove their shoes\, and women will need to cover their heads. Some scarfs will be available to borrow. Let us know if you have any questions about attire.\n\nAgenda:\n8:30 pm Arrive at Masjid Al-Nur/Welcome by Mustafa Mohamedali\n8:45pm Ladies proceed to the original mosque facility\, Men to the community hall.\n9 pm IFTAR MEAL\n9:06 – 9:45 Breaking of the fast followed by sunset (Maghreb) prayer and Iftar co-sponsored by RCF\n9:45 – 10:00 Cleanup and coffee allowing for women to proceed to community hall (basement at the mosque)\n10:00 – 10:45 RCF Presentation and Q&A by the Corries\n10:45 pm Close\nThe Community Iftar Meal is FREE to the public\, with a suggested donation of $10. Please RSVP so we have an idea of the number of guests to expect! \nALL FUNDS RAISED FROM THESE EVENTS WILL COVER THE COSTS OF THE EVENTS AND SUPPORT THE GAZA SPORT INITIATIVE \nLearn More About the Gaza Sport Initiative \nThe Gaza Sport Initiative transcends factional identities\, age\, gender\, and physical abilities to unite Palestinians together through sports for enjoyment\, play\, normality\, and community building. This grassroots initiative helps heal communities\, strengthens bonds\, and promotes nonviolence as a response to an ongoing military occupation\, siege\, and blockade. \nThe objectives are to provide a safe place for sports enthusiasts and athletes to gather and participate in athletic events\, encourage peaceful grassroots organizing\, affirm the place of the disabled in Gaza society\, and provide an opportunity for female athletes to participate in a public forum. \nThe enduring military occupation of Palestine is the primary issue addressed by the initiative. Individuals affected by ongoing siege and its associated trauma find positive role models and examples of community members addressing their immediate situation – working together\, creating healthy outlets to dispel stress\, and peaceful community relationship building. The initiative also reaffirms the place and value of the disabled and women participating in public forums. \n“The Rachel Corrie Ramadan Football Tournament is a celebration of the spirit of the Palestinian community in Gaza. It is an opportunity for people to get together\, for fleeting moments to look passed the scars of war\, the ongoing struggle under siege\, and the anxiety of the pain that is yet to come\, and seek unity\, togetherness and the love for sports. Gazans are resilient people. Their struggle is deep-rooted and recurring. But they always find a way to prevail\, and somehow to survive. \nThe Ramadan tournament\, which carries the name of Rachel Corrie\, whose memory is cherished by all Palestinians\, is one platform that helps Gazans articulate\, yet once more\, their insistence on their love for life\, and hope for the future\, despite every attempt at denying them life\, and depriving them of hope. It is a project that I fully support and endorse. It is pure in its intentions\, and noble in its message. Please support the tournament\, this year and every year.”\n– Dr. Ramzy Baroud\, Palestinian-US author\, editor and journalist.

The campaign of ethnic cleansing displaced more than 750\,000 Palestinians and destroyed more than 400 of their villages. \nAs our Palestinian friends and colleagues in Gaza continue their incredible grassroots organizing efforts with the Great Return March in the face of extreme military violence\, it is more important than ever for international audiences to show our solidarity and support for their cause. Signs will be provided.)\n\nFilm Screening of 1948: Creation & Catastrophe\, Traditions Fair Trade Cafe\, 7-9 pm\nWe will screen the film 1948: Creation & Catastrophe at 7 pm. We’ll end with a list of ways we can support Palestinians at home and abroad with concrete action items. If you plan to attend the film\, we are asking for a $10 donation to cover the cost of film screening rights. You can make the donation via this ticketing page or at the door. Please note\, nobody will be denied admission due to lack of funds. \nAbout the film: \nThrough riveting and moving personal recollections of both Palestinians and Israelis\, 1948: Creation & Catastrophe reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. But rather than being a history lesson\, this documentary is a primer for the present. It is simply not possible to make sense of what is happening in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today without an understanding of 1948. This documentary is the last chance to hear first-hand accounts of what took place in Haifa\, Jaffa\, Dayr Yasin\, Acre\, Jerusalem\, Ramle and Lydda from the Israelis and Palestinians who personally fought in and fled from this land. These shocking and dramatic events reveal the core of what drives the conflict today. The documentary includes interviews with veterans\, refugees\, survivors and historians of the war collected in Palestine\, Israel\, Jordan\, Lebanon\, the United Kingdom\, Canada and the United States. Those who lived through the war are the centerpiece of the story\, but respected historians\, including Charles D. Smith\, Avi Shlaim\, Nur Masalha\, Benny Morris\, Ilan Pappe\, Rashid Khalidi and Sharif Kanaaneh provide context for the events. A deeply committed peace activist\, Ann became active in Palestinian solidarity issues after visiting Gaza in 2009 after the 27-day Israeli war on Gaza\, worked with CODEPINK Women for Peace to bring six groups to Gaza in 2009\, and helped organize the Gaza Freedom March in December 2009 that brought 1350 persons from 40 countries to Cairo in solidarity with Gaza. \nShe has sailed on three of the more than two dozen Gaza flotillas–including the most recent 2016 women’s boat–carrying humanitarian aid and construction materials to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Ann will present an update on deteriorating conditions in Gaza and efforts to challenge Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. \nJoin us to hear from Ann about her experience on several previous Freedom Flotillas (2010\, 2011\, 2015\, & 2016) and the financial needs of this year’s initiative.

SUMMARY:The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story with Dr. Ramzy Baroud
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian journalist and historian Ramzy Baroud will speak on his new book The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story. At this critical juncture in Palestine’s history\, with Trump’s recent declaration on Jerusalem and the Likud party vote to annex West Bank settlements\, Dr. Baroud’s narrative of Palestinian dispossession\, resistance\, and resilience is important and timely. The book will be available for purchase ($20\, cash preferred) and there will be a book signing after his talk\, which will include analysis of current events. \nPresented by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace & Justice.\nAdmission is free. \nDr. Ramzy Baroud is a US-Arab journalist\, media consultant\, an author\, internationally-syndicated columnist\, Editor of Palestine Chronicle (1999-present)\, former Managing Editor of London-based Middle East Eye (2014-15)\, and former Deputy Managing Editor of Al Jazeera online. He taught mass communication at Australia’s Curtin University of Technology\, Malaysia Campus. Baroud is the author of three books and a contributor to many others; his latest volume is My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza’s Untold Story (Pluto Press\, London\, 2010). His forthcoming book is The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story. His books have been translated to several languages including French\, Turkish\, Arabic\, Korean\, among others. Baroud has a Ph.D. in Palestine Studies from the University of Exeter (2015) and is a Non-Resident Scholar at Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies\, University of California Santa Barbara. He has been a guest speaker at many top universities around the world and conducted book tours in over twenty countries. \nTHE LAST EARTH is a non-fictional narrative of modern Palestinian history. It is a unique rendition of people’s history – an account of how major historic events in Palestine and the greater Middle East impacted ordinary people\, as well as how that mass of people\, in their tenacity\, and even in their dispossession\, represent a force that determines history. \nMixing the academic discipline of ‘History from Below’ and a refined literary style\, this collection of narrative-based accounts challenges the perception that Palestinians\, mostly refugees\, are irrelevant in shaping their own history and the attempt by Zionist historians and institutions to replace the Palestinian historical narrative with a Zionist one. \nIts nine chapters contain complex characters whose stories overlap\, creating echo after resounding echo of their profound collective experience. Each chapter\, read individually\, is like an icon for the experience of an entire generation. When read as a whole\, the book tells the story of a people whose history cannot be reduced to a timeline of conflict but rather is embroidered and torn with complex human emotions\, hopes\, dreams\, struggles and priorities that seem to pay no heed to politics\, the military balance or ideological rivalries.

But many of its elements will likely prove to be destructive to the environment and to anyone but the ultra-wealthy. This workshop will deconstruct the aspects of the new Tax Bill and what their possible impacts will be on the lives of everyday people. The Bill’s opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling and its effects on the Affordable Care Act will also be examined. SUMMARY:Jerusalem Unravelled
DESCRIPTION:Join RCF & FOSNA (Friends of Sabeel-North America) to learn about and discuss recent political actions regarding Jerusalem and the BDS Movement\, and participate in an action workshop to strategize YOUR role in making a difference.\n\n\nThis free event takes place Saturday\, January 13th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at First Christian Church\, 701 Franklin St SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501. \nPalestinian Letter on Jerusalem:\n“Trump’s naming of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is not simply an act of disregard for our aspirations to justice and freedom\, it is a blatant attack against them. It is in line with Trump’s racist\, Islamophobic\, and anti-Palestinian platform\, which is legitimized using white and Christian supremacist rhetoric. As Palestinians\, we call on people around the world to follow the leadership of the Palestinian people in our aspirations for justice as we are demanding it. We make this call alongside Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA)\, a Christian ecumenical liberation organization that has been seeking justice in Palestine for over 20 years. We know that none of Trump’s actions are in line with Christian values\, and we understand liberation as giving voice to the prophetic leaders of a community to determine their own fate\, which is how God liberated his people throughout history..Peace will not come to Jerusalem without justice\, and today\, with Trump’s help\, Israel continues to colonize the holy city as the world ignores Palestinian voices. This move is\, ultimately\, one that will help Israel in its campaign to push Palestinians out of the city. We call on everyone to take action today so that Palestinians of all faiths can continue to live in Jerusalem.” Read the full letter at FOSNA. \nOverview of BDS: \nBoycott\, Divestment\, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom\, justice and equality. BDS upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity. \nIsrael is occupying and colonizing Palestinian land\, discriminating against Palestinian citizens of Israel and denying Palestinian refugees the right to return to their homes. Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement\, the BDS call urges action to pressure Israel to comply with international law. \nBDS is now a vibrant global movement made up of unions\, academic associations\, churches and grassroots movements across the world. Eleven years since its launch\, BDS is having a major impact and is effectively challenging international support for Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism. \nPlease join us to learn about these important efforts and how you can get involved at this critical time in the fight for Palestinian human rights. \n\n\n\nThis event is FREE but please register on our ticketing page.\n\n

SUMMARY:Peace Works 2017
DESCRIPTION:From Marches to Movements\nOctober 14\, 2017\nKenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts\nSouth Puget Sound Community College\nOlympia\, WA\nDownload the\n	Peace Works 2017: From Marches to Movements Program	(3313 downloads	)\n\n\nThe last year has seen an alarming rise in armed conflict\, social bigotry\, and political authoritarianism. At the same time\, unprecedented numbers of people around the globe have rallied to resist the politics of hate. Many of us have felt fear and motivation\, isolation and empowerment\, disillusion and hope. Peace Works 2017 asks how we might harness these passionate feelings into effective social movements. \nWhat tools do community groups need to better organize themselves and network with others to meet vital needs? How can individuals become engaged and empowered in the political process to affect public policy? How have successful movements and campaigns shifted public opinion and won elections? How might we reach out\, build coalitions\, and turn a passion for peace and justice into strategic victories? How can we envision and craft policies and institutions for a better world even as we fight to preserve the gains of recent decades against reactionary and regressive forces? \nSaturday\, October 14\, 2007\, the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice will host its 11th Peace Works conference\, From Marches to Movements\, at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia\, WA. The day will be filled with workshops\, panel discussions\, presentations\, and networking opportunities. People and organizations from Washington and beyond will come together to develop concrete strategies for justice\, peace\, and progressive social change. \nPurchase tickets here! \nPeace Works 2017 SCHEDULE \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTIME\nPEACE WORKS 2017 SCHEDULE\nLOCATION\nSPEAKERS/PERFORMERS\n\n\n9:00 AM\nRegistration\nLobby\n\n\n\n\n9:30am – 11am\n\nMorning Workshops\nClassroom #\n\n\n\nStrengthening Sanctuary: Building Community in Support of Immigrant Rights\nRoom 130\nAnne Fischel\, Steffani Powell\, Alejandra Hunt\, Eder Nunez (Strengthening Sanctuary)\n\n\nNarrating the Future We Want to Create: Storytelling as Social Change\nRoom 285\nElaine Vradenburgh (Window Seat Media)\n\n\nVolunteer Recruitment & Retention: A Guide to Happy Volunteers\nRoom 286\nMiguel Pineda (SideWalk)\n\n\nWe don’t want Allies: The Meaning of Solidarity at the Intersections of Housing Status and Disability\nRoom 287\nWendy Hamlin\, Pete Brown\, John Gillis (Just Housing Olympia)\n\n\n11-11:15 AM\nBreak\n\n\n11:15-12:30 PM\nWelcome & Keynote Address\nMain Stage\nWhitney Faulkner (RCF) & Matt Remle\n\n\n12:30-1:30 PM\nLunch & Networking\nLobby\n\n\n\n\n1:30-3 PM\n\nAfternoon Workshops\nClassroom #\n\n\n\nHow to influence politics & make your government leaders represent YOU!\nRoom 130\nArsalan Bukhari\, Izdihar Bailey (CAIR-Seattle)\n\n\nLearn To Do Grassroots Fundraising and Change Your Life\nRoom 285\nCecile Surasky (Jewish Voice for Peace)\n\n\nDigital Communities\, Art & Activism\nRoom 286\nNatasha Marin (Reparations project)\n\n\nDisruption and Inscription: The Complementary Tension between Social Movements and Social Movement Organizations\nRoom 287\nShon Meckfessel (Author & Professor)\n\n\n3-3:15 PM\nBreak\n\n\n3:15-4:30 PM\nPanel (w/ Keynote speaker)\nMain Stage\nMatt Remle\, Cecilie Surasky\, Shon Meckfessel w/ David Hyde Moderating\n\n\n4:30-5:00 PM\nClosing: Takeaways\nMain Stage\nDavid Hyde\n\n\n5:00-6:00 PM\nClosing Reception & Networking (Live Music)\nLobby\nMiguel & Daniel Perez-Gibson (guitar)\n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here! \n  \nThank you to our Co-Sponsors! \nHarbingers of Justice \nRebuilding Alliance \nCindy and Craig Corrie \nPartners in Peace \nWorks in Progress \nFriends of RCF \nAmericans Committed to Justice and Truth \nJewish Voice for Peace – Tacoma \nCenter for Community Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) \nCommittee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) \nOlympia Fellowship of Reconciliation  \nOlympia Movement for Justice and Peace \nMaxine Fookson and Ned Rosch \nOrganizations interested in other co-sponsorship levels please go to our designated Cosponsor Page. SUMMARY:Trump and the Prospects for Peace - What is Next for Palestine/Israel? (Lafayette\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by the son of an Israeli General who believes that\, for the good of everyone\, the separation should end and be replaced by a secular democracy where Israelis and Palestinian live as equals in their shared homeland. \n6 to 7 pm reception\, refreshments provided\n7 to 9 pm presentation and Q & A\n9 pm book signing\, mingling \nThe indecisiveness and ignorance of the Trump administration and the bluntness of the Netanyahu government have changed the discussion on Palestine/Israel. No more Two State Solution\, but rather a Single state between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. The question now is this: Will it be a democracy with equal rights or an Apartheid State? \nMiko Peled is an Israeli born writer an activist. Born to a prominent Zionist family which includes a grandfather who was a signor of the Israeli declaration of independence and a father who was a general in the Israeli army. After a 30-year-career in teaching martial arts in California\, Miko found himself confronted with the Israeli Palestinian issue in all of its horror: His 13-year-old niece was killed by Palestinians in a suicide attack in Jerusalem. This brought about a major shift that Miko describes in his 2012 memoir\, “The Generals Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” Having sold his martial arts business Miko has gone on the road and is currently a sought out International speaker\, writer\, and activist working to promote justice and equality in Palestine. \nCost: $10 in advance\, $15 at the door.\nStudents free. SUMMARY:Going Against the Current Journey of an Israeli in Palestine (Petaluma\, CA)
DESCRIPTION:6 to 7 pm potluck dinner\n7 to 9 pm presentation and Q & A\n9 pm book signing\, mingling \nThe journey of an Israeli in Palestine is not a long one geographically\, but it is a significant one emotionally\, mentally and politically. Moving from one sphere to the other is difficult\, it can be frightening and one finds himself in unchartered territory. This is true of the return journey as well\, yet it is crucial to undertake this journey if one seeks to find common ground and peaceful co-existence. \nMiko Peled is an Israeli-born writer and activist. Born to a prominent Zionist family which includes a grandfather who was a signer of the Israeli declaration of independence and a father who was a general in the Israeli army. This brought about a major shift that Miko describes in his 2012 memoir\, “The General’s Son\, Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” Currently\, Miko is a full-time writer and activist working to promote justice and equality in Palestine. \nEvent Cost: $20 payable to IONS and a dish to share if you can join our potluck from 6 to 7 pm.
