Her public rise in the Black Power and Women of Color movements made her an outspoken advocate for racial\, gender\, and economic justice. She is the author of many books\, and a founding member of Critical Resistance\, a national organization dedicated to the dismantling of the prison industrial complex. \nThis intergenerational conversation will draw inspiration from Dr. Davis’s ideas for abolition\, international solidarity for Palestine\, and collective movement building. As she has written\, “We cannot go on as usual. . .We cannot be moderate. We will have to be willing to stand up and say no with our combined spirits\, our collective intellects\, and our many bodies.” \nDr. Davis will be in conversation with Gilda Sheppard & Ranna. \nGilda Sheppard\, Ph.D.\, is faculty emerita in sociology\, cultural and media studies at \nEvergreen Tacoma\, and taught at Washington prisons for over a decade. On the evening of March 8\, 2025\, Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil was detained by the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest comes on the heels of the Department of State’s announcement that it plans to deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. The United States is expected to spend nearly $2 trillion on nuclear weapons over the next few decades\, and is rapidly expanding production. Our arms control treaties have been abandoned. From August 8 to September 5\, 2024\, and from December 3 to December 31\, 2024\, Dr. Syed served in both al-Aqsa and Nasser Hospitals in Gaza. She will discuss her experience there and the impact of the current and ongoing war on Gaza’s children\, the injuries she saw and treated\, the targeting of hospitals and healthcare workers by the Israeli military\, and the lack of “basic life essentials” for the people of Gaza. Some images in this presentation may be unsettling. \nDr. Emily Antoon-Walsh\, pediatrician\, will introduce Dr. Syed and talk about her own work with the Institute for Understanding Anti-Palestinian Racism. The presentations will be followed by Q&A. \nThe educational event is sponsored by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice and Palestine Action of South Sound (PASS) in remembrance of activist Rachel Corrie’s stand in Gaza on March 16\, 2003\, as she stood to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home and whose birth day is celebrated on April 10th. In their words\, “This collaborative work is an expression of collective grief and hope—a journey moving through tragedy and remembrance to hope and resilience.” The community will be invited to contribute messages of their own to the installation. \nOn the second floor of the adjacent Labor Temple building\, the Art Forces Peacemaker Gallery will be exhibiting Shoshana Cohen’s original collection of photographs depicting the day-to-day lives of youth living under occupation in the West Bank during the 1980s and 90s.

We may feel powerlessness\, grief\, or rage – or all of these in turns. These are understandable reactions to what some have termed an administrative coup by the Trump Administration. Yet we may also feel hope and community as we resist injustice and cruelty. Together\, let us consider what kind of nonviolent actions are most effective when our democratic norms and processes are being trampled. \nThis year’s Spring Assembly Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Stephen Zunes\, speaking on “Authoritarianism and Resistance: What the World Can Teach Us.” Stephen is a Professor of Politics and Global Studies at the University of San Francisco\, where he serves as coordinator of Middle Eastern Studies and the incoming director of USF’s Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice. He is a renowned scholar specializing in U.S. foreign policy\, pro-democracy struggles\, and strategic nonviolent action. \n\n\nSome of Stephen’s recent attention has been to what he has called the “slow moving coup” in the United States\, and on resisting authoritarianism. In the early hours of June 13\, Israel targeted Iran with a series of airstrikes using American weapons. Several were killed in Tehran. The two largest militaries in the region are now exchanging blows\, while the Trump administration\, scrambled by Israel’s unprovoked attack on Iran\, wavers on the edge of direct US involvement. The panel will be composed of faculty of The Evergreen State College. \n \n  \n
