SUMMARY:An Ordinary Insanity - film and discussion
DESCRIPTION:An Ordinary Insanity \nOn the nuclear threat \nBy Daniel Ellberg \nSunday\, July 26 \n5:00 PM -6:30 PM \nTraditions Fair Trade / Soul Cafe \nIn this 29-minute documentary\, renowned whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg provides a powerful wakeup call about the global threat posed by nuclear weapons and how we can dramatically reduce the real and present danger of nuclear annihilation. \nBefore he released the top secret Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War\, Ellsberg was a nuclear war planner with access to classified information on U.S. nuclear strategy. \nFilmed a year before his death at age 92\, Ellsberg speaks with clarity and urgency about the dangers we face\, noting\, ”I’ve long said that to my last breath I will be doing what I can to postpone and avert the risk of nuclear war.” \nWith ongoing conflicts heightening nuclear tensions and with the recent end of the new START treaty potentially triggering a renewed arms race\, An Ordinary Insanity is a timely film to help mobilize broad public concern and action for arms control and nuclear disarmament. \nThis free event is organized by a community member involved in the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.(OCANW) The Rachel Corrie Foundation is a partner organization of OCANW. \n

SUMMARY:Palestine Day at the Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rachel Corrie Foundation at Dancing Goats and Singing Chickens Farm for Palestine Day at the Farm\, a free gathering rooted in community\, land\, and connection. \nThe day will include children’s activities\, a farm tour\, a facilitated plant exploration and conversation\, and a chance to connect with the Corries\, RCF staff\, and community. Free lunch of maqloobeh and falafel will be provided by Food Not Bombs. Come ready to spend meaningful time with people who care deeply about this land and the people on it. \nProgram of the Day: \n\n10:00 – 11:00am – Gathering\, connecting\, kids activities\n11:00am – 12:00pm – Farm tour with Farmer Ayub\n12:00 – 12:30pm – Lunch\n12:30 – 1:30pm – Plant exploration and conversation with Michelle Ryder\n1:30 – 2:00pm – Closing\n\nAt the heart of the day\, Michelle Ryder will facilitate a conversation on what the plants around us reveal about who we are. She brings a grounding lens to land stewardship rooted in forensic botany\, anti-colonial inquiry\, and deep love for the living world. We gather on Nisqually homeland\, a prairie ecosystem that Indigenous people cultivated through fire for generations\, and where the plants around us carry hundreds of years of history. \nMichelle will guide an interactive exploration of what the presence and absence of plants reveal about colonization\, ecological disruption\, and our responsibility to this place. She draws connections between the threatened native oaks of this region and the olive trees of Palestine\, and invites us to investigate what grows right outside our door with fresh eyes and honest questions. \nHow does the colonization of land shape stewardship here\, and how does it shape life for Palestinians? Come ready to look closely\, ask honestly\, and share. \nThis event is free. Please RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Kite Festival - solidarity with occupied Burin
DESCRIPTION:The residents of Burin\, in the occupied West Bank\, invite people around the world to fly kites with them between July 4 to July 12. Every year\, residents and activists of the village organize the Kite Festival\, where the whole community comes together to build and fly kites in the skies of Burin. The festival represents an act of resistance and a sign of the daily struggle of the residents in the face of the harsh reality of the occupation. The message of the festival is: \n“We have the right to smile\, we have the right to have fun. We have the right to be happy\, we have the right to play\, we have the right to move. From the Burin mountains to the sands of Gaza they will not kill our hope.” \nOur partners at Palestine Action of South Sound are organizing a Kite Festival in Olympia\, Sunday July 5\, 12-5pm\, near the Heritage Fountain. and invite people to help prepare kites every Monday night ahead of the Kite Festival on July 5th.  Reach out to Michelle ((akkadia@gmail.com) to help volunteer during the Kite Festival. \nEVERYONE IS WELCOME.  Come join us designing\, decorating\, and flying kites. \nJewish Voice for Peace Tacoma is also hosting a Kite Festival on July 5th\, 2pm at Dune Peninsula Park. \nRead more about the Kite Festival here and register to host your own solidarity event.

SUMMARY:Nakba Day
DESCRIPTION:On May 11\, 2022\, acclaimed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by the Israeli military. Shireen was fatally shot by an Israeli military sniper while she was reporting for Al Jazeera on Israel’s “military raids” on the Jenin Refugee Camp in the northern West Bank. \nThe “military raids” near Jenin happened just before Nakba Day\, marked every year on May 15. Nakba refers to the catastrophe of the destruction of more than 500 Palestinian villages and the forced displacement of over 750\,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 as Israel became a state. \nScholars agree that the Nakba began before 1948 and has never ended. It is an ongoing reality today for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. \nCommemorate the Nakba with us this Friday\, and come to other events this month supporting Palestinians\, promoting peace\, and confronting militarization. \nJoin us this Friday at our weekly peace vigil\, 4th & Water Street\, as we remember Shireen Ablu Akleh and commemorate the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day\, or find a Nakba Day event near you.

SUMMARY:Winning Divestment For Palestine at the State Level: The State of State Divestment - a webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join a webinar on Saturday\, May 2 for a discussion about state-level divestment campaigns in the United States. This session is valuable for activists who are already engaged in BDS (Boycott\, Divestment\, Sanction) campaigns\, as well as for those just getting started. \nActivists from the state of Washington will share insights from their recent successful effort to push the state Treasurer to divest from Caterpillar\, due to the company’s longstanding involvement in Israel’s grave human rights violations against Palestinians. \nAlso hear from organizers in California who are building a broad\, union-centered coalition to target the state’s pension funds and advance divestment efforts\, and from activists in Minnesota\, who successfully pressured the state to sell off most of its Israel Bonds. \nEvent cosponsors include the BDS Movement\, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)\, Jewish Voice for Peace\, CalSTRS Divest\, and Minnesota Anti War Action Network. \nSign up here to get the Zoom link for the webinar.

SUMMARY:Cut Ties with Genocide celebration - Caterpillar Divestment
DESCRIPTION:Cut Ties with Genocide is a Washington State-led coalition of organizations led by Washington For Peace and Justice\, and Jewish Voice for Peace Seattle. It advocates that the state divest from holdings in companies that profit from the ongoing genocide\, ethnic cleansing\, and the illegal occupation of Palestinian land\, and commit to not purchasing Israel Bonds now or in the future. \nThe Rachel Corrie Foundation endorses the work of Cut Ties with Genocide. \nCut Ties with Genocide\, on Instagram\, shares that on the 23rd anniversary of the killing of peace activist Rachel Corrie\, the Washington State Treasurer’s office has fully divested from Caterpillar Inc.. Just months ago\, the Treasurer’s office held $62 million in Caterpillar bonds. Today\, that number is zero. \nCaterpillar manufactures the armored Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer\, which has long been used by the Israeli military in demolitions in the occupied Palestinian territories. A Caterpillar bulldozer\, operated by Israeli soldiers\, was also the machine that killed Rachel Corrie\, a Washingtonian and peace activist\, in 2003. \nCome celebrate this historic victory with Cuts Times with Genocide on March 29\, 4-8pm\, at Reuben’s Brews in Seattle. \nRead more about praise for this work in the March 25 article in The Seattle Times\, “Advocates praise WA for selling off $62M in Caterpillar bonds“.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED - NEW LOCATION "Rachel" the film w/ panel with Corries
DESCRIPTION:Due to weather this event on March 13 has been rescheduled.  The same organizers are moving the event to happen on March 16 at Cherry Street Village\,  720 – 25th Ave\, Seattle. \nJoin the Palestine Narrates film series for a screening and discussion of Rachel (2009) to mark Rachel Corrie’s 23rd yarzheit – the anniversary of her death. The investigative documentary\, made 6 years after Rachel’s killing by an Israeli armored bulldozer\, shows the life\, activism\, and legacy of a young international solidarity activist from Olympia. \nAfter the movie\, Rachel’s parents\, Craig and Cindy Corrie\, and representatives of the International Solidarity Movement\, a Palestinian-led non-violent resistance movement which guided Rachel’s activism in Gaza\, will offer their thoughts and answer audience questions. As always\, the Nablus Collection will bring Nabulsi olive oil\, soap\, za’atar and other items. \nThis film will bring up themes of international solidarity\, the double meanings of witness/shaheed/martyr\, and the continuities in Gaza from 2009 to today. We hope to see you and your beloveds there. \nPalestine Narrates is a project of JVP Seattle. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:UNRWA Gaza 5k Walk/Run
DESCRIPTION:UNRWA USA is bringing its most iconic event to the Pacific Northwest for the very first time. This is your chance to provide critical psychosocial support to the millions impacted by the ongoing Israeli military assault on Gaza. This event includes an optional 5K walk/run\, fundraising prizes\, community\, and as much Palestinian culture as we can squeeze into your morning. The Gaza 5K is your chance to meet and connect with folks who share your solidarity and commitment to the mental well-being of refugees. \nSince 2012\, this annual event has united communities across the US in solidarity to fund mental health counseling and trauma support for Palestine refugee children. More than a race\, it’s a fun way to take action\, experience Palestinian culture\, and show Palestine refugees that Americans care. \nYou don’t have to run. Walk\, cheer\, or fundraise (the most important part to support life-saving UNRWA services—but everyone must register in advance. \nRCF has a team! You can join the RCF team at this link: https://getinvolved.unrwausa.org/team/706968 \nLearn more about Gaza 5K history at gaza5k.org \nNot in the Seattle area or prefer to participate from home? You may also choose the virtual option! \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Peace Vigil - week 95
DESCRIPTION:We continue to gather every Friday at Percival Landing in downtown Olympia to vigil for Palestinians to remain safely in Gaza\, and for peace with justice.  This week we gather after more than ninety-five weeks\, and almost twenty-two months\, since Israel began its assault on Gaza following October 7\, 2023. \nThe people in Gaza are in danger of dying of starvation unless we act now.  Sign this petition organized by Americans for Justice in Palestine Action (AJP Action)\, calling on President Trump to ensure that the President and Congress immediately compel Israel to allow unrestricted emergency food aid into Gaza\, exclusively managed by the United Nations and credible humanitarian organizations; and the immediate termination of the immoral\, mercenary “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.” \nJoin us today and every Friday to say “FEED GAZA NOW!” If you can\, please bring your own sign with that message\, or come and use one of our other signs calling for a free Palestine. Bring a friend! \nThanks to the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation for organizing these peace vigils through the years\, and for inviting us to share this space. It’s important we remain visible in our collective work for peace.
