SUMMARY:5 Broken Cameras: Fundraiser for Palestinian Children's Relief Fund
DESCRIPTION:Tomorrow\, Tuesday\, November 21\, at 7:00 pm\, join the Rachel Corrie Foundation and Olympia Film Society (OFS) for a screening of 5 Broken Cameras\, a documentary film chronicling a Palestinian farmer’s life and his community’s nonviolent resistance to the Israeli occupation and confiscation of village land. \nAbout the Film \nNominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 85th Academy Awards\, this film is an extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism. Human Rights Watch writes\, “5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a deeply personal\, first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil’in\, a West Bank village surrounded by Israeli settlements. Shot by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat\, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son\, Gibreel\, the film was co-directed by Burnat and Guy Davidi\, an Israeli filmmaker. Structured in chapters around the destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras\, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village upheaval.” \nCindy Corrie\, who has visited Bil’in six times since 2005\, will provide a short introduction to the film. \nDoors open at 6:00! Tickets can be purchased through this link for $12 (general admission) or $9 (OFS members). No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nAll funds raised at tomorrow’s event will directly benefit the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF)\, a nonprofit organization working to deliver essential and life-saving medical relief\, as well as humanitarian aid such as food\, clean water\, and healthcare to Palestinian families affected by the crisis. Since hostilities began on October 7th\, PCRF has played a crucial role in developing relief efforts aimed at the over one million children in Gaza\, who desperately need humanitarian aid after enduring 44 days under siege. If you cannot attend the screening but would like to donate to PCRF\, please visit their website.

SUMMARY:Rep. Strickland Tele-Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:ACT NOW! \nOlympia & Washington 10th Congressional District friends\, \nThis Thursday\, November 9\, at 6:30 p.m.\, Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) is hosting a one-hour Tele-Town Hall. Make your voice heard! If you or someone you know lives in Olympia\, or elsewhere in Washington’s 10th Congressional District\, demonstrate your concern for the families of Gaza and all that has happened in the Middle East by registering for the Tele-Town Hall and submitting a written question to Rep. Strickland about the current crisis. Rep. Strickland will likely respond to only a couple questions on this topic during her hour-long Tele-Town Hall Thursday\, but by submitting your question\, you will help to let her know that many people in our WA/10 Congressional District care deeply about this issue and about all that is happening now. \nWith the space allowed\, you may also be able to support the following: \n\nAn immediate ceasefire.\n\n\nProtection for the civilians of Gaza and the West Bank\, for whom Israel holds responsibility – as stipulated by the Fourth Geneva Convention.\n\n\nAn end to military aid to Israel and that no U.S. funding be used for bombing\, the commission of war crimes\, or the perpetuation of a genocide in Gaza.\nHumanitarian and life-saving aid to the civilian population of Gaza.\n\nPre-register to join the Tele-Town Hall here: https://strickland.house.gov/live \n  \n

SUMMARY:Arts Walk: Hidden Histories Launch & the Rededication of the ORSM
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (RCF) and the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural Project during Fall Arts Walk weekend to see images from the Palestinian Cultural Palace – a cultural\, developmental\, and social gathering place for young people in Gaza. On Saturday\, October 7\, between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. at Capitol Way and State Ave.\, we will also rededicate the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural in commemoration of RCF’s 20th anniversary. We will hear from artists\, activists and community members about the mural’s past\, present\, and future and about its impact. For those who can’t make the rededication event\, RCF\, Art Forces\, and the ORSMP will be at the mural for the duration of Arts Walk\, providing information on the mural’s history\, its relationship to the community\, and details on our recent and upcoming projects. There will be live music\, Palestinian crafts\, and artisan olive oil from Canaan Palestine available for purchase. \nWe encourage the public to also join us at the mural from 10:00-11:00 a.m.\, Saturday\, October 7\, the second day of Arts Walk\, for the launch of three new “Olympia’s Hidden Histories” self-guided walking tours\, created by students and faculty at The Evergreen State College. This growing collection of downtown walks makes visible the stories of Olympia’s diverse communities\, natural ecology\, and connections to the world. The new tours\, developed by students in Evergreen’s “Taking Back Empire” program\, focus on the Port of Olympia and its connections to global shipping and trade\, militarization\, and fossil fuels. Students who produced the tours will speak on their projects\, together with community members who collaborated with the project\, and public and college officials who wish to express support. Attendees can then walk the self-guided ArcGIS StoryMaps tours\, which are accessible (without an app download) on a smartphone\, tablet\, or laptop\, using the QR Code or the link at https://artforces.org/hiddenhistories. The ArcGIS StoryMaps walking tours collection is a collaboration of Evergreen State College students and faculty with the “Walls Tell Stories\, Olympia” project\, created by Art Forces and supported by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (the organizations that created the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural). The project has been partially funded by a Washington Humanities SHARP grant\, a Thurston County Heritage Grant\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:"Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire" Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite those of you in the Olympia area to join us next Monday\, October 2\, 7:00 PM\, at New Traditions Fair Trade in downtown Olympia\, 300 5th Ave SW\, for Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire. \nYousef Aljamal\, Palestinian writer and translator from Gaza\, will speak about the ongoing struggle for Palestinian liberation\, freedom of movement\, and the impacts of the Israeli occupation. \nJoining the event will be Jennifer Bing\, National Director of the Palestine Activism Program at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Jennifer began her advocacy for Palestinian children after working as a teacher in a Quaker school in Ramallah during the first Palestinian uprising (1986-1989). During those years she also worked as a field worker and researcher for Save the Children\, documenting the impact of the first popular uprising on Palestinian children under the age of 16. Since joining AFSC in 1989\, Jennifer brings a long history of advocating for peace with justice and Palestinian rights. \nThis event is part of the AFSC sponsored 2023 Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire Book Tour. Yousef Aljamal contributed to the anthology\, and Jennifer Bing served as its co-editor. \nWe hope to see you next Monday\, October 2\, at New Traditions Fair Trade as we all take advantage of this unique opportunity to focus on Gaza! \n“Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire (Haymarket Books\, 2022) is a seminal\, moving and wide-ranging anthology of Palestinian writers and artists. It constitutes a collective effort to organize and center Palestinian voices in the ongoing struggle. As political discourse shifts toward futurism as a means of reimagining a better way of living\, beyond the violence and limitations of colonialism\, Light in Gaza is an urgent and powerful intervention into an important political moment.” \n

SUMMARY:Palestine Through Two Lenses
DESCRIPTION:Two writers\, one Palestinian and one Jewish\, exploring ways to move forward.\nNada Elia and Alice Rothchild have published books in the last year that focus on Palestine/Israel in two very different ways. Alice’s is a young-adult novel\, while Nada’s is a nonfiction exploration and analysis. What the books have in common in addition to their Palestine/Israel focus is awakening to injustice. One is a personal awakening\, the other is intersectional — an exploration of the connected and intertwined social fabric. Both books include options for moving forward.\nYou can also find the event on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Break the Silence -Stories of Occupation – Tantura: Online Film & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Our colleagues at the Mideast Focus Film Series at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle will commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Rachel’s death with a film screening and discussion of the film Tantura: “When Israeli graduate student Teddy Katz meticulously documented a massacre of Palestinian civilians surrounding Israel’s independence\, he was initially celebrated for his groundbreaking work. But soon\, he was stripped of his degrees and was publicly shamed as a fraudulent traitor. Decades later\, incendiary new evidence emerges to corroborate Teddy’s initial findings\, not just vindicating him\, but raising profound questions about how Israelis—and we all—deal with the darker chapters of history.” The discussion will feature a pre-recorded interview with director Alon Schwarz. Learn more and watch the trailer here.\nZoom only: Register for a link to this film and discussion by requesting a link at seattlemideastfocus@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:No Tech for Apartheid: Sept. 8 Seattle
DESCRIPTION:“For over a year\, Amazon and Google workers have been organizing to end their companies’ $1 billion contract with the Israeli military and apartheid government. Through their contract\, Amazon and Google help the Israeli government surveil Palestinians\, expand illegal settlements\, and inflict violence on Palestinians under siege and occupation. \nThe message is clear: tech workers do not want to build technology used to enable Israel’s oppression of Palestinians. And as The New York Times just revealed\, when these workers speak up for Palestine\, they face threats and retaliation. But they’re not stopping and we’re showing up in solidarity. \nOn September 8th\, Amazon and Google tech workers will lead direct actions in front of their offices in New York City\, the Bay Area\, and Seattle to escalate the pressure on their companies. \nJoin workers and community organizations in Seattle to say #NoTechForApartheid and show Amazon and Google that we won’t stay silent while they power violence against Palestinians. \nNot in Seattle? SUMMARY:The Battle for Beita: Confronting Israeli Settler Colonialism in the West Bank & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, August 4th at 7:00 PM PST for “The Battle for Beita: Confronting Israeli Settler Colonialism in the West Bank & Beyond.” Registration is available at https://bit.ly/3iefZKi. \n\n\n\nIsrael’s theft of Palestinian lands for Jewish settlements has met fierce resistance in the Palestinian town of Beita in the northern West Bank. Palestinian land defenders have mobilized against a new Israeli settler outpost on Mount Sabih that aims to steal valuable agricultural land from Beita and nearby Palestinian villages. The battle for Beita is a microcosm of the broader Palestinian struggle against Israeli settler-colonialism throughout historic Palestine that illegally targets Palestinian land and property in order to replace them with Jewish settlement. The story of forcible dispossession for settlement is the same\, whether in Beita\, Bethlehem\, Sheikh Jarrah\, Jaffa or the Naqab/Negev desert. \n\n\n\nThis event will feature two speakers who will illuminate the struggle on the ground in Beita and provide a broader overview of Israel’s settler-colonial land theft throughout historic Palestine so that participants can deepen their knowledge of the situation in order to take action. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nImad Ahmad is a Palestinian-American whose family hails from Beita and who has spent extensive time in Beita. He will explain Beita’s long history of anti-settlement resistance and outline the innovative popular resistance strategy they are employing to fight back against the Israeli settlement outpost and land theft. \n\n\n\nSteve Niva is a professor of Middle East politics at The Evergreen State College and former editor of Middle East Report magazine who studies Israeli settlement expansion and has lived and worked in the West Bank. He will explain the broader strategy of Israeli colonization in the West Bank\, why Beita’s lands are being targeted and how Israel’s new government is composed of far-right settlers who support the annexation of Palestinian land.
