DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, August 4th at 7:00 PM PST for “The Battle for Beita: Confronting Israeli Settler Colonialism in the West Bank & Beyond.” Registration is available at https://bit.ly/3iefZKi. \n\n\n\nIsrael’s theft of Palestinian lands for Jewish settlements has met fierce resistance in the Palestinian town of Beita in the northern West Bank. Palestinian land defenders have mobilized against a new Israeli settler outpost on Mount Sabih that aims to steal valuable agricultural land from Beita and nearby Palestinian villages. The battle for Beita is a microcosm of the broader Palestinian struggle against Israeli settler-colonialism throughout historic Palestine that illegally targets Palestinian land and property in order to replace them with Jewish settlement. The story of forcible dispossession for settlement is the same\, whether in Beita\, Bethlehem\, Sheikh Jarrah\, Jaffa or the Naqab/Negev desert. \n\n\n\nThis event will feature two speakers who will illuminate the struggle on the ground in Beita and provide a broader overview of Israel’s settler-colonial land theft throughout historic Palestine so that participants can deepen their knowledge of the situation in order to take action. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nImad Ahmad is a Palestinian-American whose family hails from Beita and who has spent extensive time in Beita. He will explain Beita’s long history of anti-settlement resistance and outline the innovative popular resistance strategy they are employing to fight back against the Israeli settlement outpost and land theft. \n\n\n\nSteve Niva is a professor of Middle East politics at The Evergreen State College and former editor of Middle East Report magazine who studies Israeli settlement expansion and has lived and worked in the West Bank. He will explain the broader strategy of Israeli colonization in the West Bank\, why Beita’s lands are being targeted and how Israel’s new government is composed of far-right settlers who support the annexation of Palestinian land.

DESCRIPTION:Assia Bendaoui sets out to investigate long-brewing rumors that her quiet\, predominantly Arab-American neighborhood was being monitored by the FBI. When she’s investigating\, she exposes a surveillance program on a scale no one could have imagined. \nShuruq 4.5 and Habibi Collective present a live screening of the feature film\, ​The Feeling of Being Watched.​ Following the screening\, join Habibi Collective founder Róisín Tapponi and director Assia Boundaoui for a Q&A session on surveillance in Arab American cinema. \nRóisín Tapponi is an Iraqi-Irish curator\, film programmer and writer based in London. In 2018 she founded Habibi Collective\, a digital archive and curatorial platform for MENA women’s filmmaking. She has directed four film festivals in the region\, most recently Iraq’s first independent film festival\, Independent Iraqi Film Festival (IIFF). She has​curated programmes on MENA filmmaking in galleries\, festivals and cinemas across the world and has lectured on Arab film at institutions such as Oxford University. She is currently developing the first independent streaming service for MENA cinema\, Shasha Movies Ltd. She is also founder and editor of ART WORK Magazine\, a critical art e-publication for cultural workers operating on the margins\, and has worked as a freelance journalist for publications such as The Guardian\, Frieze\, Vogue and i-D. Tapponi currently works at The Mosaic Rooms\, a gallery in Kensington dedicated to contemporary Arab art and is pursuing postgraduate research at UCL. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAssia Boundaoui​ is an Algerian-American journalist and filmmaker based in Chicago. She has reported for BBC\, NPR\, Al Jazeera\, VICE\, and CNN and was the recipient of a first place Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for her reporting in Yemen.

DESCRIPTION:Monique Mansour is a first-generation Iraqi-Chaldean American and was born and raised in Southern California. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from UC Riverside\, and a BA in Screenwriting and Sociology from Loyola Marymount University before serving as a Fulbright Scholar in Malta\, where she taught Creative Writing to middle grade students and lectured in Rhetorical Studies at the University of Malta. She’s a Professor of Rhetoric at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She’s working on a few TV projects\, and is in process of co-authoring a novel based in-part by her cultural upbringing as an Iraqi-Chaldean American.

DESCRIPTION:Join Vancouver\, B.C.- based Canadabkeh troupe in this specially-choreographed piece\, showcasing the beauty of Levantine folkloric dance! Video is pre-recorded and available for multiple viewing. \nCanadabkeh was founded by Haytham and Zaid Alhamaydeh\, two brothers from Nablus\, Palestine. After both noticing that dabke culture was not active in Vancouver\, they decided to look for passionate individuals who would share and pursue the vision of bringing joy to the community through zaffe chants and loud dabke footwork. \nCanadabkeh consists of a women’s dabke team and a men’s dabke team who work closely to establish a functional well-rounded dabke representation. Canadabkeh is known for their diverse and energetic performances.

The absurdity of their surroundings mixed with their previous life begins to loom over their relationship\, threatening the only comfort they have: each other. \nLike Salt – While boxing and jazz rely on improvisation\, they both have a deep sense of resilience. Hala\, an Arab American female boxer in New York City\, and Kendrick\, an African American jazz musician\, improvise their way through a passive aggressive America. She’s Miles Davis in boxing gloves and he’s Muhammad Ali refusing to live a lie. \nPlanet of the Arabs – ​Planet of the Arabs​ is an experimental short on Hollywood’s negative depiction of Arabs and Muslims through the decades. Inspired by Dr. Jack Shaheen’s book “Reel Bad Arabs”\, Planet was an official selection at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and continues to screen at art exhibits and used in classrooms as an educational tool on stereotypes in the media. \n

SUMMARY:Shuruq 4.5 Writing Showcase: Ameerah Bader
DESCRIPTION:Ameerah Bader is a Palestinian-Tlingit poet and illustrator located in Boise\, Idaho. They have been writing poems for ten years and drawing for nine. In 2019 they graduated with BFAs in both illustration and printmaking. Humor\, identity\, and tiny moments are centered within Ameerah’s work. They appreciate the unseen. They enjoy merging both imagery and language to engage in storytelling. Their favorite color is all of them but just a little desaturated. They enjoy singing in the morning\, falling asleep with a book on their lap after lunch\, drinking wine in the evening\, riding their bicycle into the sunset\, and blinking at the stars. Ameerah has been published a handful of times\, nominated for the Pushcart Prize twice\, and is currently working on a small collection of small poems.
