As our supporters may know, friends of Rachel in Rafah have held the tournament these past six years. The month-long, amateur tournament’s goal is to celebrate Ramadan by providing a festive tournament as a safe place for people to have fun. It is an act of resisting occupation and siege by building community and honoring Rachel.

This year the tournament featured over 500 players on 50 teams. Each team took the names of towns and villages in historic Palestine captured or destroyed by Israel in 1948.

This year’s 26 day tournament drew in crowds of over 3,000 people including a significant number of youth. According to organizer Adnan Abu Al-Saud, the theme was “a point of convergence between Rachel Corrie as a human rights defender and Gaza refugee’s legacy of resisting injustice”.

Our project partner again this year in Gaza was Al Basma Club for the Disabled, whose all-deaf team edged higher in the standings last year. Each year, through many difficulties and obstacles the tournament has endured; another testimony to the spirit of the people of Gaza under siege.

We are grateful for all of the individuals around the world who, through generous donations, made this tournament a successful event for all!
