Join the Rachel Corrie Foundation for the 2016 Annual Human Rights Day Celebration for an evening of food and knowledge. Gather together for an evening with friends and enjoy delicious food prepared by local Skokomish chefs Twana Catering, wine and locally-brewed beer donated by Three Magnets Brewing Co., a musical performance by Benjamin SittingBull, a Plains Indian singer, flutist and drummer, and a discussion on environmental and political activism.
The featured discussion will highlight the first-hand experiences of people working on the front lines of environmental and political activism in the US and Palestine. Our guest speakers this year, MorningStar Means and Earth-Feather Sovereign, will present “Standing Rock, Human Rights and Women” in a keynote talk. We hope to generate discussion of key questions including: How does settler colonialism in North America compare to settler colonialism in Palestine? How are struggles of indigenous people collaborating and what can we do to support? This conversation will assist in developing our understanding of how powerful principled allyship and what ‘showing up’ to support struggles should look like. Join us on our Facebook page.
RCF is committed to practicing engaged solidarity and is looking forward to sharing what we have in store for 2017.
Please note:
On 10 December 1948, the newly founded United Nations General Assembly adopted the universal declaration of human rights considered to be the origin of the era of rights and human rights. Human rights day has been officially commemorated since 1950. 48 countries voted for adopting the commemoration and 8 abstained.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, together with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its two Optional Protocols, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, form the so-called International Bill of Human Rights.
