Huwaida Arraf
This is one of the speakers at The Rachel Corrie Foundation’s 2006 Peace Works Conference.
Huwaida Arraf is a first generation Palestinian-American. The oldest of five children, she was born and raised in Detroit, MI. In 1998, she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan with majors in Political Science, Arabic and Hebrew & Judaic Studies. While in college, she co-founded and facilitated an Arab-Jewish dialogue group on campus and participated in numerous other co-existence and conflict resolution programs. Huwaida spent her junior year abroad, studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem – the only Arab on the program. After graduation, Huwaida worked to promote the rights of Arab-Americans in her position at the Arab American Institute in Washington, DC. In Spring 2000, Huwaida accepted a job as a Program Coordinator in Jerusalem with Seeds of Peace – an American-based non-profit organization focused on working with youth from regions of conflict, including the Middle East, Cyprus and the Balkans. Huwaida left her job with Seeds of Peace a year later after becoming more involved in active resistance to the Israeli occupation forces and policies. With other Palestinian and international activists, she co-founded the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in April, 2001.

PeaceWorks 2006 Workshops
This is one of this site’s entries for The Rachel Corrie Foundation’s 2006 Peace Works Conference.
Participants will come to these “Action Workshops” with resource materials, questions, problems, and ideas. We will discuss and exchange information and experiences related to specific kinds of work on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. We will share successes and obstacles, address the most urgent questions and opportunities posed by the work, and share and develop tools, strategies, and networking opportunities in order to be more effective. Participants with all levels of experience are welcome at all workshops.

Palestine for Beginners -
Presenters: Linda Bevis and Ed Mast
Location: North end of the Student Union Building
For several years, as the situation has changed, Linda Bevis and Ed Mast have developed, presented, and updated this fast-moving presentation of the roots of conflict, the key historical and current events, and the characters and motivations behind the ongoing crisis. An attorney and high school world history teacher, Linda Bevis lived for several years in the West Bank working with a human rights organization. Ed Mast is a playwright and performer whose play SAHMATAH, co-written with Hanna Eady, has played in the Middle East and Europe since 1998. Linda and Ed have done human rights work, together and separately, in Northern Ireland, Central America and the former Soviet Union, and in 2002 they jointly received the annual human rights award of the United Nations Association of Seattle. They are among the co-founders of Palestine Information Project, a Seattle organization which creates educational materials and presentations about human rights issues in Israel/Palestine and about the US role in the conflict.

Dr. Sara Roy

Dr. Sara Roy is a Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University where she completed her doctoral studies in international development.Trained as a political economist, Dr. Roy has worked in the Gaza Strip and West Bank since 1985 conducting research primarily on the economic, social and political development of the Gaza Strip and on U.S. foreign aid to the region. Dr. Roy has written extensively on the Palestinian economy, particularly in Gaza, and has documented its development over the last three decades.

Maysoon Zayid
This is one of the speakers at The Rachel Corrie Foundation’s 2006 Peace Works Conference.
Maysoon Zayid, actress and professional stand-up comedian was the first comedian to perform stand-up live in Palestine where she appeared in Nazareth, Haifa, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jerusalem, Maysoon spends three months a year in Palestine where she runs an art program for disabled and wounded refugee children. She is also Co-Chairperson of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival, as well as co-host of the radio show Fen Mejnoon (“Crazy Art”) with Dean and Maysoon.
Maysoon will be performing for conference attendees on Saturday, April 22nd at 7:30pm.
